LOS ANGELES — The Stanislaus State baseball team grabbed a California Collegiate Athletic Association series-opening victory on the road Friday at Cal State LA, thanks to scoring seven runs in the first three innings, as the Warriors beat the Golden Eagles, 8-6, at Reeder Field.
Â
Grant Bunker homered and tripled in the first two innings as part of a 2-for-3, three-RBI night, and
Joseph Hauck tripled in the first to help Stanislaus State (3-3, 1-0 CCAA) jump out to a 4-0 first-inning lead. The Warriors tied a season high with nine hits and had two triples in the same game for the first time since Feb. 1, 2020, versus Central Washington.
Â
Maxwell Pappas (2-0) did not allow an earned run in six innings pitched, striking out seven and only allowing three hits to earn the victory.
Noah Chelberg earned his first career save with 2 1/3 innings of shutout work. He recorded six strikeouts among the seven batters he retired, only facing one over the minimum.
Â
Chelberg got the Warriors out of a jam in the seventh to preserve the win. He entered with the tying run in scoring position and the Golden Eagles (5-6, 0-1 CCAA) already having rallied for four runs in the inning. It took him two pitches to get the third out of the inning and strand a runner at third, and then he'd come back out and throw consecutive shutout frames for the save.
Â
Hauck finished the night 2 for 4 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI.
Matt Elser,
Zach Jones and
Ryan Leonesio also drove in runs. A.J. Salgado went 2 for 3 with two walks and a run scored to lead the CSULA offense.
Â
The two teams continue the series Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 1 p.m. Fans can find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
