TURLOCK — Da'Myiah Lewis turned in a double-double Thursday in her return to the court for the Stanislaus State women's basketball team and the defense forced 26 turnovers, but visiting Cal State San Bernardino pulled away in the second half and held off a late charge to earn a 55-46 California Collegiate Athletic Association win at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
Â
Lewis, who hadn't played since Jan. 2 at Chico State, led a limited Warriors (11-5, 6-4 CCAA) roster with 14 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. She also had five steals – her second-most in a game this year.
Kaleigh Taylor had 10 rebounds as well with Stan State collecting 48 boards as a team, tied for its second-highest game total in 2021-22.
Taylor Pilot was Stanislaus State's other double-digit scorer with 12 points, narrowly missing her second straight double-double with nine rebounds and five steals.
Â
Cal State San Bernardino (7-12, 4-9 CCAA) committed 26 turnovers in part due to 16 steals by the Warriors. Stanislaus turned those into 21 points, but the Coyotes' defense was even better at shutting down the Warriors' shooting. Stan State shot just 21.7% on Thursday, its lowest percentage of the year and lowest in more than three years, since also shooting 21.7% at Sonoma State on Jan. 19, 2019. The Warriors played with only eight active players on Thursday, with five playing 30 or more minutes.
Â
Destiny Jackson led Cal State San Bernardino with 11 points. Mia Dufrense was one point short of a double-double with nine to go with 10 boards. Tori Guzman contributed 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Â
The Warriors pulled to within one at the end of the first quarter after a slow start. The 'Yotes built an 11-point lead in the second, but back came the Warriors again in the third, tying the game at 31-31.
Liliana Marques' big 3-pointer to beat the shot clock tied the game and capped an 11-2 run.
Â
But that was it for the young and fatigued Warriors, as CSUSB scored the next 14 points to go up 45-31 early in the fourth and never look back. The Warriors made one more push in the fourth quarter, using a 12-2 run to cut Cal State San Bernardino's lead to four with two minutes to play, but they shot 0 for 7 after that with a lone free throw made.
