TURLOCK -- The Stanislaus State softball team scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh of game one Friday to come from behind and earn an exciting walk-off victory, splitting their California Collegiate Athletic Association series-opening doubleheader with San Francisco State with a 7-6 win in the opener and a close, 2-1, setback in the nightcap at Warrior Field.
Six of the Warriors' (4-11, 2-8 CCAA) first seven batters of the inning reached safely with a leadoff walk and five singles to start the bottom of the seventh. The only batter that didn't reach safely was
Sarah Warden, who brought home the first run of the rally with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-3.
Karli DalBianco and
Madison Flexser brought home runs with singles to make it 6-5.
Melissa Spencer tied the game at 6-6 when she reached safely on a fielder's choice to second base. Her groundball was perfectly placed to make a play at first almost impossible with Spencer's speed, and the tag at second failed, leaving the bases loaded.
Sheridan Gulley took one pitch, then put the ball in play during the next at-bat, challenging the SFSU second baseman again. The play came home, trying to get the force out, but the throw was wide, allowing pinch-runner
Cameron Ordaz to score the winning run, handing Stanislaus State a 7-6 walkoff triumph.
The Warriors were narrowly defeated in the nightcap after San Francisco State got two unearned runs in the top of the third. The Warriors answered with a run of their own in the bottom half, but couldn't tie it up or take the lead. They would leave four runners in scoring position in the final five innings.
