Warriors Take Series Lead with Doubleheader Sweep

TURLOCK — Excellent pitching Saturday silenced the Cal State Dominguez Hills bats that had been so loud in Friday's opener, as the Stanislaus State baseball team took a 2-1 series lead by sweeping Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader by scores of 3-1 and 4-1 at Warrior Field.

Cal State Dominguez Hills (9-8, 4-3 CCAA) hit four home runs and scored 11 runs on 12 hits in Friday's opener. The Stanislaus State (6-6, 4-3 CCAA) pitching staff wasn't having any of that on Saturday, limiting the Toros to two total runs on 10 total hits – all singles – across the two games.

Freshman Tony Jacob earned his first career win as a Warrior in the opener, throwing a complete game. He struck out six and walked none, and until the ninth, had only allowed two hits. The Toros finally started rallying in the top of the ninth. They hit four singles and brought seven batters to the plate, but only scored one run and would leave the bases loaded, as Jacob got his sixth strikeout – a four-pitch at-bat against pinch-hitter Kevin Moscoso – to end the game.

A quartet of Stan State pitchers got the job done in game two. Anthony Ramirez started the game with two shutout innings and three strikeouts, but he left early. That forced Trent Huff and Damian Vallejos into service. They combined to allow only one run in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Then Noah Chelberg came on to get a seven-inning save. He only faced one over the minimum after walking the first batter he faced, going on to retire seven straight to earn his second save.
