SAN FRANCISCO — A wild nightcap that featured two explosive offenses followed a duel of pitching aces in the opener Saturday, as San Francisco State swept a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader from the Stanislaus State baseball team, winning game one 5-2 and walking off in game two, 13-12, at Maloney Field.
Â
GAME ONE
Â
Maxwell Pappas (6-4) and Gary Grosjean (5-3) went head-to-head on the mound in the opener. Pappas only allowed two earned runs (four total) and struck out nine in six innings of work. Grosjean pitched into the ninth inning, striking out five and only allowing one run in the victory. Mario Vargas got the final two outs to earn the save.
Â
San Francisco State's (16-23, 11-20 CCAA) first run came across in the fourth inning, an unearned run that scored on an error with two outs. The Gators loaded the bases with one outs in the sixth and would add three runs to its lead. The last run was unearned after a bases loaded walk followed another two-out error that would have ended the inning.
Â
Stanislaus State (12-28, 9-25 CCAA) scored its runs in the seventh and ninth innings. A leadoff double in the seventh by
Matt Elser allowed him to later come home on an RBI groundout by
Jonluke Goldman. The Warriors earned a bases-loaded walk as well in the ninth to make it 5-2, but they would leave them loaded when the game ended on a fly ball with the go-ahead run at the plate.
Â
Both teams had six hits, and only SFSU's Kody Gardner had more than one hit with a 2-for-4 game.
Â
GAME TWO
Â
In complete contrast to the opener that totaled 12 hits and seven runs between both teams, the afternoon game was an offensive fireworks display. San Francisco State and Stanislaus State combined for 25 runs on 25 hits – seven for extra bases. 10 different pitchers were used in game two, and what made it even more impressive is the second game of a doubleheader only goes a pre-scheduled seven innings.
Â
The teams traded crooked-number scoring innings six different times through the game's first six frames and headed into the seventh tied 12-12. AJ Schrader wiped all of the previous six innings' madness with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the seventh. He hit a one-out walk-off homer to right field, winning the game for the Gators, 13-12.
Â
Stanislaus State had a four-run third and a six-run fourth. The Warriors' first five batters in the third reached safely, capped by a bases-loaded walk to
Trevor McInerney that made it 5-2 at the time. Two more runs came in on what would have been a double play. SFSU made the out at second base but threw the ball away on the turn attempt, allowing a second run to score and making it 5-4.
Â
The Warriors' first six batters of the fourth reached safely, featuring five free passes (four walks, hit-by-pitch). Two bases-loaded walks gave Stan State a 6-5 lead, then
Alex Solis cleared the bases with a three-run double to make it 9-5. The Warriors scored two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 12-12. Solis doubled home another run to make it 12-11. A hit-by-pitch and a bunt single loaded the bases, and then Solis scampered home on a wild pitch to score the tying run.
Â
Solis finished the game 3 for 5 with four RBIs, two doubles, two runs scored and a stolen base.
Cole Thompson also had three hits (3 for 4) with a double.
Danny Murphy went 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored.
