Warriors Honor Three on Senior Day vs. Chico State

TURLOCK — One of the top teams in the West Region and in the California Collegiate Athletic Association took advantage of every opportunity given to it Saturday, as Chico State extended its winning streak to 10 games with a doubleheader sweep of the Stanislaus State softball team on Senior Day at Warrior Field.

Chico State (34-11, 24-8 CCAA) scored three unearned runs in the opener en route to a 4-0 victory. The Wildcats came from behind in the nightcap, scoring a run on an error, then later benefiting from a close call to eventually knock in two more runs and win, 3-2.

Stanislaus State (15-28, 9-23 CCAA) honored three seniors playing in their final home games Saturday. Delaney Pamplin, Melissa Spencer and Riquel Riveira all were recognized in a pregame ceremony.

GAME ONE

Chico State ace Brooke Larsen (17-4) threw her second complete game shutout in as many days to open the doubleheader. It was her 19th complete game and ninth shutout of the season. She struck out six, only walked one, and like Friday, only allowed three singles.

Kyndra Marzorini (5-11) threw her eighth complete game in a row, going inning-for-inning against Larsen. She limited the powerful Chico State offense to only one earned run while striking out five.

It was three Stanislaus State fielding errors in the top of the third that allowed Chico State to score its first runs. The first two put two runners on and allowed a run to score. The third put two runners on base, with one of them coming home later on an RBI single by leading hitter Nina Revoir.

The Warriors got runners in scoring position twice but stranded them. Sheridan Gulley led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, trying to get a rally started, but Larsen struck out the next three batters – all swinging – to end the game.

Marzorini held the top of Chico's batting order (1-2-3 hitters) to just 1-for-11 hitting. It was the middle of the Wildcats' order (4-5-6) that did the damage, hitting .364 (4 for 11) with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Revoir went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Pinch hitter and designated player Alani Nguyen went 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI.

GAME TWO

Like Friday's nightcap, the Warriors jumped on the Chico State pitcher in the circle not named Larsen. This time it was Katelyn Oldwin who the Warriors chased from the game in just the second inning, scoring two runs on five hits against her to take an early 2-0 lead.

The Wildcats got their first run in the fourth inning on a throwing error. Chico State put on a double steal with runners on the corners and two outs. Stan State threw down to third base to make sure the runner didn't go, but the throw sailed into left field, making it 2-1.

The game's other key play was also related to a double steal in the next inning. Chico State had runners on first and second and sent them. Stan State's throw went down to third base, and the ball got there in plenty of time, but Anastacia Alba slid under the tag and was ruled safe. Two batters later, Reilani Peleti singled home both runners with two outs – an at-bat that wouldn't have happened had the earlier call at third base gone the Warriors' way.

Delaney Pamplin (9-11) threw a complete game – the 16th of her career and 12th of 2022 – only allowing two earned runs (three total) while striking out three and only walking one. Chico State's Mari Takeda Bajan (8-3) earned her second win in the series with 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Lauryn Serda, Katie Thornsberry and Madison Flexser each had two hits in the game. Grace Stover, Peleti and Alba did the same for Chico State.
