TURLOCK — Strong pitching highlighted day one of the four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series between Sonoma State and the Stanislaus State softball team Friday, as the Seawolves rode two complete game shutouts to a doubleheader sweep with 8-0 and 2-0 wins at Warrior Field.
Â
The Warriors (12-21, 6-16 CCAA) had some strong pitching of their own.
Kyndra Marzorini (3-8) threw 10 2/3 total innings in the two games Friday, including a complete game in the nightcap. She struck out six in seven innings during game two, only allowing one earned run and scattering six hits (only one for extra-bases).
Â
Karli DalBianco had Stanislaus State's lone hit in the opener. Four Warriors had hits in game two, with
Melissa Spencer striking for a double (1 for 3).
Â
GAME ONE
Â
Sonoma State's (28-14, 16-10 CCAA) Camille Rodriguez (13-4) carried a perfect game into the fourth inning before giving up both her first hit and first walk of the game. She would only allow one walk after that, while the Seawolves' offense carried the team to a run-ruled shortened, six-inning, 8-0 victory.
Â
The Warriors – already trailing 6-0 in the fourth – moved two runners into scoring position, but Rodriguez got one of her four strikeouts in the game to end the threat.
Â
The Seawolves' offense slapped 12 hits and scored eight runs, six of them in the first three innings. SSU posted four runs – three unearned – in the first inning against Stan State starter
Delaney Pamplin (8-7). Three more hits and a double steal in the third led to two more runs and a 6-0 advantage. Giana Hays homered to lead off the fifth inning and make it 7-0. And after Reagan Hunt led off the sixth with a double, she'd come home on an RBI groundout from pinch-hitter Lauren Mirtoni to put Sonoma State at that pivotal 8-0 lead.
Â
Pamplin only allowed three earned runs in her 2 1/3 innings of work, but it was the three other unearned runs and eight hits that chased her in the third. She had one strikeout and didn't walk anyone before Marzorini came in to relieve her.
Â
GAME TWO
Â
Much more of a pitchers' duel evolved in game two. Sonoma State didn't score until the third inning, taking a 1-0 lead thanks in part to two errors committed in the frame by the Warriors.
Â
Stanislaus State looked like it had taken its own 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly. Stan State had two runners in scoring position, but the runner at second was called for leaving early, and the resulting double play ended the inning and kept the run off the board.
Â
Marzorini continued to shut down the Seawolves in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. She only allowed one runner in the fourth, stranded two runners in scoring position with a strikeout to end the fifth, and went 1-2-3 in the sixth.
Â
Sonoma State tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a two-out RBI single from top-of-the-order hitter Anna Zoia-Buescher, making it 2-0. The Warriors brought the tying run to the plate with one out after a single from
Sheridan Gulley, but another unfortunate double play ended the game, with
Jalyssa Ledesma hitting a ball hard – but right at the shortstop – which doubled off Gulley from first.
