LOS ANGELES – In a concerted effort to stretch their win streak to seven, the Warriors couldn't manage to take down the Golden Eagles in a 1-3 final. The team takes only their second loss of the season, putting them at 7-2 on the year.
Â
Stan State's first conference game of the season came with its own challenges, as they were up against a Cal State LA team who was on a winning streak of their own for the last three matches. The Golden Eagles stunned the Warriors early in the first set with an early four-point run. However, the team was able to bring the deficit within two points with kills from Alex Bryd,
Penelope Zepeda, and
Macky Morris. The scoring run later moved back into the home team's favor to cap an 8-25 opening set.
Â
The Warriors started to get their grove back in the following set as
Autumn Kirby,
Ellison Weaver, and
Natasha Mich got involved on the offensive end with kills of their own. Kirby led the team with eight kills for the match. Blocks by Zepeda, Morris, and Byrd also kept the Golden Eagles at bay midway through the set. Morris recorded six of the team's eight blocks on the night. The visiting Warriors had their backs against the wall down 16-24 and managed to put up an impressive comeback to bring the score back to 22-24. Attack errors from Cal State LA bounced in the Warriors' favor, along with kills from Mich and Morris.
Haley Burdo flexed her talent at the service line with the final ace of the set. Burdo's 12 assists for the match led the team, closely followed by
Eyriana Eatmon's eight.
Â
Down 0-2 to start the match, the Warriors stood their ground in the third set to stage a comeback.
Gabby Rawson did her normal work on the floor to secure 12 digs to go along with five assists, but the Golden Eagles managed to outscore the Warriors' team totals in both categories. The Warriors posted three block assists in the third set alone, led by Mariah Iousua, Macky, and Byrd. Eatmon, Burdo, and Rawson shared the wealth with nine total assists to take the third set. Stan State also had three services aces from Weaver and Burdo to steal a 25-21 set victory.
Â
The fourth set showed similar trends as the second, as the Warriors kept the deficit from getting too far away from them early on. The collective didn't showcase their normal accurate attacking percentage and Cal State LA was able to capitalize. Both clubs ended the match tied with eight blocks each, but the Golden Eagles led all other major statistics for the evening to finish the final set 13-25.
Â
The Warriors will head back to the drawing board to clean up some costly mistakes before they travel back to Carson Saturday, Sept. 10
th at 3pm to face Cal State Dominguez Hills for the second time this year.
