Stanislaus State Finishes Non-Conference Slate with 3-0 Win

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stanislaus State Warriors ended their non-conference slate with a 3-0 win over the visiting UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs this evening at Warrior Stadium.  The Warriors (3-1-3) scored their first goal in the ninth minute as Finn Hoffman connected on a ball from Sammy Villanueva.  Their two other goals came from Josh Santillan and Erick Anaya. '

QUOTES FROM THE COACH;  "Tonight, I thought we applied ourselves very well and took advantage of the opportunities," said head coach Morgan Cathey.  "At the same time we made it difficult on the opponent to create clear chances, which is something we continue to grow in.  I think I am most proud of the response in the second half for such a collective effort and to have so many players step up and provide real value tonight was great for our program!"

FIRST HALF:  The hosts took the early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when Finn Hoffman connected on his second goal of the season off a cross from Sammy Villanueva.  UC Santa Cruz had a chance to tie the match at 1-1 in the 16th minute when Derek Uemura's shot was blocked by Stanislaus State's defense.  The visitors had another chance eight minutes to tie the match, but once again the Warriors' defense blocked the shot attempt by the Banana Slugs.  Stanislaus State doubled its lead when Josh Santillan connected on his fifth goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 26th minute.  UC Santa Cruz (1-4-3) had a chance to cut into the lead late in the first half, but Itay Rabinovich's shot sailed high over the crossbar as the match went into the half with Stanislaus State leading 2-0.

SECOND HALF:  The Banana Slugs had four chances in the first 15 minutes of the second stanza to cut into the Warrior lead, but the hosts' Rosas stopped all four UC Santa Cruz shot on goal attempts.  The match remained 2-0 Stanislaus State until the 75th minute.  That is when Erick Anaya connected on a ball from Bradley Magnussen to increase the hosts' lead to 3-0.  The Warriors had a chance for their fourth goal of the match be stopped as Antonio Garcinuno-Ortiz's shot on goal attempt was stopped by the Banana Slugs' Arman Salimi.  UC Santa Cruz saw its last chance for a goal sail high over the goal as the hosts took the 3-0 non-conference victory.

NUMBER FOUR:  Stanislaus State recorded its fourth shutout of the non-conference season.  Tonight's shutout was Robby Rosas' fourth shutout in goal for the Warriors.  Alex Renderos posted Stanislaus State's other shutout against Saint Martin's.

FIVE ON THE SEASON:  Josh Santillan connected on his team leading fifth goal of the season when he scored on a penalty kick in the 26th minute.  This was the Warriors' third penalty kick of the season as Alexander Cuellar and Daniel Gomez connected on Stanislaus State's other two penalty kicks.

EIGHT:  With Sammy Villanueva and Bradley Magnussen recording assists this evening, the Warriors have eight assists on the season.  Eight different players have at least one assist this season for Stanislaus State.

CCAA SEASON UP NEXT:  The Warriors will return to the pitch this weekend to begin the CCAA season on the road in Southern California.  Stanislaus State will face Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, September 23 at 3pm in San Bernardino.  The Warriors will continue their road trip with a 2pm scheduled match with Cal State San Marcos on Sunday, September 25 in San Marcos.
