TURLOCK, Calif-- Stan State outscored the visiting Cal Poly Broncos 24-9 in the final five eight minutes of this evening CCAA game to defeat the Broncos 70-62.
Kobe Ordonio paced the Warriors with a game high 23 points while
Marlon Short chipped in 16 points. The Warriors finished their season long five-game home stand 4-1 to improve to 7-9 overall and 5-5 in the CCAA.
FIRST HALF: Cal Poly Pomona (7-6, 4-5 CCAA) took a 11-4 lead after a Caleb Nelson three five minutes into the game. The Broncos took a 12-point lead twice including on a Chris Gayles, Jr. jumper with 4:04 left in the first half to give the guests a 31-19 lead. A
Travion Williams' lay-up off a pass from
Marlon Short capped a 14-2 run by the Warriors as they tied the game at 33-33 with 24 seconds to go in the half. A Shyheim Parm jumper gave Cal Poly Pomona a 35-33 lead heading into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: A
Kobe Ordonio three off a pass from Short cut the Bronco lead to 37-36 just three minutes into the second half. Cal Poly Pomona increased its lead 45-40 on an old-fashioned three-point play by Christopher Mitchell. Once again, Stan State came right back and cut the deficit to one (45-44) this time on a Matt Bander jumper off a pass from
Benno Zecic. CPP built its lead back to five, this time 51-46 on two free throws by Parm with 8:25 on the clock. An Ordonio fast break lay-up after a Short steal and assist capped a 12-2 run by the Warriors as they took a 63-58 lead. Parms' free throw cut the Warrior lead to four (58-54) with just four minutes left in regulation. Stam State held CPP scoreless in the next three minutes to take a 65-54 lead capped by a Jermaine Jones lay-up after a steal by Zecic. The Warriors went five-for-seven from the line down the stretch including Ordonio going five-for-six as they took the 70-62 victory.
RIGHT BACK IN THE HUNT: With Stan State going 4-1 in its five-game home stand, the Warriors are now 5-5 in the CCAA which places in sixth place. The Warriors are just one game out of fifth place and two games out of third place. The top six teams at the end of the regular season will receive a berth to the CCAA Championships, March 2-4, that will be held at Stan State. The winner of the CCAA Tournament will receive the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
WHAT A WEEKEND FOR KOBE AND MARLON: What a weekend for the duo of
Kobe Ordonio and
Marlon Short. Ordonio averaged 23 points and 3.5 rebounds in the two games while he shot 44% from the field including 41% from three-point range. He was 13-for-14 from the line. Short averaged 18.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game while dishing out four assists and recording seven steals.
ALMOST A PERFECT TEN: Benno Zecic had nine assists with no turnovers this afternoon to go with his three steals, four rebounds and three points. Zecic has 110 this season in the Warriors' first 16 games. For his career, he has 252 assists on the Warriors' all-time career list in assists.
DEFENSE WINS: Stan State held the Broncos to just 34% shooting from the field including 26% from three-point range. The Warriors forced 18 turnovers by Cal Poly Pomona including nine by steals. Of those nine steals, three came from
Marlon Short and
Benno Zecic.
Will Pallesi had two and
Baljot Sahi had one.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: The Warriors will begin a four-game road trip this weekend in the Bay Area. They will travel to San Francisco on January 19 for a 7:30pm scheduled tip-off with SF State. Stan State will face Cal State Monterey Bay on January 21 in Seaside for a 3pm scheduled game.
