SEASIDE, Calif-- Stan State saw its second half rally come up short as Cal State Monterey Bay defeated the Warriors 80-74 this afternoon at The Otter Sports Center in Seaside, Calif.
Marlon Short scored a career high 28 points to lead the way for the Warriors.
Kobe Ordonio chipped in 13 points while
Travion Williams had his first double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
FIRST HALF: A Joe Wall three gave Cal State Monterey Bay (6-10, 4-7 CCAA) an early 13-5 lead in the first five minutes of the game.
Marlon Short's lay-up off a pass from
Benno Zecic cut the Otters' lead to just one (18-17) at the twelve-minute mark of the first half. Once again, the Otters built their lead to five (22-17) at the mid-way mark of the first twenty-minute period. A
Daniel Ameyaw lay-up off a pass from Zecic capped a 4-0 mini-run by the Warriors as they cut the deficit to one (22-21), The Otters went outscored Stan State 26-11 in the next eight minutes to take a 48-32 lead. Stan State scored the final four points of the half including two by
Kobe Ordonio as the visitors cut CSUMB's lead to 48-36 heading into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: Stan State cut its deficit to 61-53 on a Short lay-up off a pass from Zecic in the first seven minutes of the new stanza. A Jailen Nelson jumper gave the Otters back a double-digit lead (63-53). A Zecic three off a pass from Ordonio capped a 11-2 Warrior run as they cut the Otter lead to 65-64 with a little over seven minutes left in regulation. The Warriors took their first lead on a jumper by Short (68-67) at the 6:06 mark of the half. They increased their lead to 74-67 on another Short jumper with just four minutes left in the game. CSUMB finished the game holding the Warriors scoreless scoring the game's final 13 points to take the 80-74 victory.
CAREER HIGH: Marlon Short scored a career high 28 points this afternoon on 14-for-25 shooting from the field. He also grabbed four rebounds while dishing out a season high six assists with one steal in 37 minutes.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Travion Williams recorded his first double-double as a Warrior this evening with 11 points and a career high 12 rebounds. He went three-for-eight from the field and five-for-six from the line. Williams had seven offensive rebounds to go with his two steals, one assist and one blocked shot.
20/31: Stan State had 20 assists on 31 made baskets this afternoon with
Benno Zecic's seven leading the way followed by
Marlon Short with six.
Kobe Ordonio had three while
Jeremiah Jones had two.
Travion Williams and
Will Pallesi each had one. Zecic now has 119 for the season which is five from moving into 11
th on Stan State's single season list and 14 from moving into tenth. The redshirt junior has 261 for his career which is 36 from moving into fourth place on the all-time career list at Stan State.
UP NEXT: The Warriors will end their four-game road trip this week. They will be in Carson, Calif., on January 26 for a 7:30pm rematch with Cal State Dominguez Hills. Stan State will finish off its road trip with a 3pm game on January 28 with a rematch with Cal State East Bay in Hayward.
