Warriors Sweep Season Series from Chico State

CHICO Calif.---  For the third straight season, Stan State swept the season series from the Chico State Wildcats with a four-set victory over the hosts this evening at Art Acker Gymnasium in Chico.  This Wednesday in Turlock, the Warriors swept Chico State (25-21, 25-14, 25-17).  
 
FIRST SET:  The visitors took an 8-5 lead to begin the first set.  Four consecutive kills by Makenna Carrillo, Mariah Iosua (two), and Samaya Royal increased Stan State's lead to 13-7.  The Warriors took a 17-10 lead on a kill by Alex Byrd off an assist from Haley Burdo.  Chico State (4-10, 1-9 CCAA) cut the Warrior lead to 19-16, but the visitors took four of the next five points to increase their lead to 23-17 capped by a Burdo service ace.  A Rein Bocage service ace finished the set off for the Warriors as they took an 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-18 set one victory.  
 
SECOND SET:  The second set was even until the Warriors rallied for the next nine points capped by back-to-back kills by Alex Byrd and Eyriana Eatmon.  Chico State cut its deficit to 19-13 on a service ace by Alexis Presser.  The Warriors finished off the second set taking six of the set's final nine points capped by back-to-back kills by Makenna Carrillo and Mariah Iosua both off assists from Kendall Hughes.  Stan State took a 2-0 lead in the match with the 25-16 set two victory.  
 
THIRD SET:  Chico State took a 15-11 lead in the third set on a Jessie Camarillo off an assist from Zoe DiNardo.  The Warriors took the next three points keyed by a Rein Bocage service ace to cut the deficit to 15-14.  The hosts took a 20-15 lead as they took five of the next six points.  Stan State didn't go away as the Warriors cut Chico State's lead to 23-20 on a Samaya Royal kill off a Haley Burdo assist.  Chico State took the set, 25-21, as the Wildcats took two of the set's final three points capped by a Kassandra Nall.  With the win, the hosts cut the Warrior lead in the match 2-1.
 
FOURTH SET:  Back-to-back combined blocks by Alex Byrd and Isabella Saucedo and Byrd and Ellison Weaver gave the Warriors a 4-1 lead in the fourth set.  A Samaya Royal kill off a Haley Burdo assist increased the guests' lead to 14-7.  Back-to-back kills by Emily Vander Weide and Byrd off assists from Mariah Iosua and Eyriana Eatmon increased Stan State's lead to 17-9.  Chico State's Brooke Ono cut the deficit to 19-14.  The Warriors took the six of the final nine points capped by a Royal kill from a Burdo assist to give Stan State the set four victory, 25-17, and the four-set victory.  
 
WARRIOR LEADERS:  Three Stan State players had double digits in kills in Samaya Royal (13), Ellison Weaver (11), and Mariah Iosua (11).  Ellison Weaver and Rein Bocage each had three service aces and Haley Burdo added two.  Alex Byrd led the Warriors with five total blocks.  Burdo added 18 assists while Eyriana Eatmon added 15.  Gabby Rawson had a team leading 19 digs with Weaver adding 13 and Bocage 12.
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE:  With her 11 kills and 13 digs, Ellison Weaver recorded her second double-double of the season and sixth of her career.  Three other players have recorded double-doubles this season in Mariah Iosua (three), Haley Burdo (two), and Eyriana Eatmon (one).
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  Stan State (8-11, 3-7 CCAA) has won the last seven matches between the two teams since 2019.  The last Chico State victory over the Warriors was a three-set Chico State win in three sets in Turlock.  Stan State is 8-2 against the Wildcats in the last ten meetings dating back to 2018.  
 
UP NEXT:  The Warriors will return home this coming week of October 16 to begin a four-match home stand.  The Warriors will host SF State (Friday, October 20, 5pm), No. 13 Cal State San Bernardino (Saturday, October 21, 5pm), Cal State San Marcos (Friday, October 27, 5pm, Dig Pink Match), and No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona (Saturday, October 28, 2pm).
