Men’s Soccer Travels Back to Southern California to Face CSUDH and No. 12 CSULA

TURLOCK, Calif.---  After their two matches against Cal Poly Humboldt and Sonoma State, Stan State will return to the pitch for a pair of conference matches in Southern California this Friday and Sunday, October 20 and 22 against Cal State Dominguez Hills and No. 12 Cal State Los Angeles.  The Warriors will be in Carson for a 7pm match against the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills this Friday, October 20.  They will conclude their trip to Southern California this Sunday, October 22 in Los Angeles for a 2pm starting match with No. 12 Cal State Los Angeles.    
 
UPDATE ON THE WARRIORS:  Stan State is 3-8-2 overall and 0-4-2 in the CCAA heading into its trip to Southern California.  The Warriors are twelfth place and seven points out of sixth place which Sonoma State currently holds with its nine points.  The top six teams at the end of the regular season on November 2 will receive a berth to the CCAA Soccer Championships which will run November 5, 10-12.  The first round will take place at campus sites with the semi-finals and final to take place at College Creek Field on the campus of Cal Poly Humboldt.  The winner of the CCAA Championships will receive a berth to the NCAA Soccer Championships.
 
Tyler Tipton leads the team with his 11 goals and 22 points.  Three players each have the Warriors' three game-winning goals in Edgar Castaneda, Finn Hoffmann, and Tipton.  Tipton is five-for-five in penalty kick attempts. Castaneda is tied for the team lead each with two assists with Hoffmann, Sammy Villanueva, and Leonardo Muniz.  Second on the team with his eight points (three goals, two assists) is Castaneda followed by Hoffmann (six points, two goals, two assists) and Villanueva (four points, one goal, two assists).  Robby Rosas has a 2.17 goals against average with 66 saves, .717 saves percentage, and one shutout. 
 
LAST MATCHES: Stan State went 0-1-1 last week in its two matches against Cal Poly Humboldt and Sonoma State.  The Warriors started the week with a scoreless draw at Cal Poly Humboldt on Thursday. Robby Rosas recorded three saves in goal for the Warriors.  They ended their week with a 3-2 nail-biting loss to Sonoma State at home on Sunday.  Tyler Tipton scored his team and conference leading tenth and eleventh goals of the season. 
 
FIRST-YEAR HEAD COACH:  John Powell'11 returned to his alma mater as the Warriors' head men's soccer coach when he was hired this Spring after spending the past two seasons on the sidelines at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. Powell guided the Nighthawks to a 15-4-3 record this season including an appearance in the NCAA Division II Super Region Four Final (Elite Eight).  He was the 2022 Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Coach of the Year and guided the Nighthawks to their best season in program history.  They captured the GNAC regular season title and won three NCAA Division II Tournament matches, before losing 1-0 to the National Champion Runner-up, Colorado State-Pueblo.  He coached twelve All-GNAC honorees and four All-Region players during his two-years at NNU. In his four seasons coaching at Stan State and Northwest Nazarene with a 29-26-5 overall record. 

CCAA LEADERS:   Tyler Tipton and Robby Rosas are in the top eight in the CCAA in seven statistical categories.  Tipton leads the league in goals (11), goals per game (.846), and points (22) and is second in points per game (1.69).  Rosas leas the CCAA with his 66 saves and is second in saves per game (5.08) and eighth in saves percentage (.717).
 
NATIONAL LEADERS:  In the latest NCAA Division II statistical report, Tyler Tipton and Robby Rosas are in the top 30 in seven statistical categories.  Tipton is third in shot accuracy (.742), eighth in goals (11), 13th in goals per game (.85), 18th in total points (22), and 26th in points per game (1.69).  Rosas is eighth in total saves (66) and 24th in saves per game (5.08).  
 
TIPTON:  Tyler Tipton is tied for second on the Warriors' single season goals list with Daniel Kuczynski and Jose Ramirez with his 11 goals.  He is tied for fifth with his 22 points with Julian Madrigal
 
HONORS:  For his performance the week of September 18-24, Tyler Tipton was named the Pixellot/CCAA Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the week.  Tipton scored three of the five goals in Stan State's 1-1 week at home against Academy of Art and then No. 5 Chico State.  He started the week scoring two goals in the Warriors' 3-1 victory over Academy of Art.  The sophomore forward finished the week scoring a goal in Stan State's 3-2 loss to the nationally ranked Wildcats.  
 
CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS:  The Toros are 4-4-4 overall and 1-3-2 in the CCAA and tied for ninth place with Cal Poly Humboldt each with five points.  They went 1-0-1 last week with a 1-0 win at Cal State San Bernardino and a 2-2 tie with nationally ranked Cal Poly Pomona at home.  Brandon Lee leads the team with his three goals, two assists and eight points. Jhoel Sarraude is next with his seven points, three goals, one assist followed by Martin Velasquez with two goals, two assists, and six points.  All three of Lee's goals are game winners.  Sebastian Ascensio has a 1.19 goals against average with 22 saves and a .733 saves percentage in seven matches in goal.  Arturo Magana has played six matches in goal with a 0/94 goals against average, 19 saves, and a .792 saves percentage. 
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  Cal State Dominguez Hills leads the all-time series with the Warriors 10-4-2.  The two teams tied 1-1 last season in Carson.  Robby Rosas had six saves in goal for Stan State.  The last victory for the Warriors was in 2016, a 2-0 win in Turlock.    
 
NO. 12 CAL STATE LOS ANGELES: The Golden Eagles enter their match on Friday at home versus No. 3 Chico State with a 10-1-1 record and a 5-1 CCAA record.  They are in first place in the conference with their 15 points, two points ahead of Cal State Monterey Bay.  CSULA has won its last four matches in a row including both this weekend a 1-0 win at nationally ranked Cal Poly Pomona and a 5-0 win over Cal State San Bernardino at home. Bryan Ortega leads the Golden Eagles with his five goals, four assists, and 14 points.  Oliver Diaz is second on the team with his four goals followed by Jeppe Paulsen with two goals, three assists, and seven points.  Julian Aadlandsvik has a 0.33 goals against average with 57 saves, a .934 saves percentage, and nine shutouts in twelve matches in goal.

UP NEXT:  After Sunday's home match, the Warriors will return home for their final two home matches of the regular season against No. 23 Cal State Monterey Bay (Fri., Oct. 27 at 7pm) and SF State (Sun., Oct. 29 at 11:30am).  Prior to Sunday's match on Oct. 29, the Warriors will recognize the following seniors:  Sebastian Castellanos, Gerardo Delgadillo, Finn Hoffmann, Julian Madrigal, Bradley Magnussen, Adam Mockridge, Nick Namwali, Cesar Ponce, and Robby Rosas in a brief ceremony.
