SAN DIEGO--- Stan State trailed 51-47 with ninety seconds left, outscored the Sunbirds 9-2 capped by
John Wade III and
Jonathan Tchengang going four-for-four from the charity stripe to key the Warriors' 56-53 victory in the PacWest/CCAA Conference Challenge in San Diego.
Daniel Ameyaw had a career high with 12 points and seven rebounds with Wade and
Micah Boone each chipping in ten points.
FIRST HALF: Fresno Pacific jumped out to a 7-2 lead to begin the game. An Alvar Peltoneimi lay-up increased the Sunbirds' lead to 11-4 eight minutes into the first half. A four-point play by
Tony Singleton capped a 9-2 run by the Warriors as they tied the game at 13-13. They took a 18-15 lead on a
Jeremiah Jones' lay-up at the 8:03 mark of the first half. Stan State (1-1) increased its lead to 26-21 on a three by
John Wade III. Fresno Pacific ended the half outscoring the Warriors 10-3 to take a 31-29 lead into the half on an Avery Lewis three-point field goal.
SECOND HALF: The Sunbirds (0-2) came out of the locker room on an 8-2 run to take a 39-33 in the first four minutes of the second half.
Noel Alexander Jr.'s lay-up off a missed shot cut the deficit to 43-41 mid-way through the half.
Daniel Ameyaw scored the Warriors' next four points to give Stan State a 45-43 lead. Isaac Peralta capped a mini 6-0 run by the Sunbirds as they took a 49-45 lead with just 4:24 on the clock. With 98 seconds to go in regulation, Gabriel Quiette made two free throws as FPU took a 51-47 lead. On Stan State's next possession,
Tony Singleton hit a three off an assist from Ameyaw to cut the Sunbirds' lead to 51-50. The Warriors' defense came up with a stop on FPU's next possession and Ameyaw gave Stan State a 53-50 lead off an assist from Singleton. FPU took a 53-52 on its next possession with just 14 seconds to go in the game. The Warriors called a time out and
John Wade III was fouled with just seven seconds on the clock. Wade made both free throws as Stan State took a 54-53 lead. Once again, the Warrior defense came up big and forced a turnover.
Jonathan Tchengang was fouled with less than a second to go and sealed the Warrior 56-53 victory as he made both free throws.
BENCH POINTS: For the second straight night, the Warriors' bench outscored their opponents. This time 46-14 lead the trio of
Daniel Ameyaw (12 points),
John Wade III (10 points), and
Micah Boone (10 points).
Tony Singleton chipped in nine points.
DEFENSE: Stan State held the Sunbirds to just 34.5% shooting from the field including just 18.8% from three-point land. The Warriors forced 15 turnovers by FPU including eight by steals.
John Wade III led the way with three and five players each had one steal in

CAREER NIGHT: Sophomore post player
Daniel Ameyaw had a career high with 12 points on six-of-ten shooting from the field. He tied his career high with seven rebounds while blocking a shot and dishing out an assist in 29 minutes.
