SAN RAFAEL, Calif.--- Stan State trailed by 15 in the first half, but outscored Dominican 58-40 in the final 32 minutes to defeat the Penguins 62-60.
Dontrell Hewlett led the way for the Warriors with 14 points while
Micah Boone and
Tony Singleton each chipping 11 points. The Warriors' bench outscored Dominican's 47-9.
FIRST HALF: Dominican (0-3) jumped out to a 20-5 lead in the first 12 minutes of the game. The Warriors didn't go away as they went on a 16-2 run and cut the deficit to 24-22 with 3:42 left in the first half. A three by Garrett Siebels capped a 7-2 run by the Penguins as they took a 31-24 lead with a little under two minutes left in the half. Stan State scored the final four points on a
Dontrell Hewlett lay-up and a free throw by
Micah Boone to cut the Penguin lead to 31-28 heading into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: Stan State (2-1) kept the momentum going as the guests started the half outscoring their hosts 7-4 to tie the game at 35-35 on a lay-up by
Jonathan Tchengang off a steal and assist by
Dontrell Hewlett. A
Mahda Fallay three off a pass from
Tony Singleton gave the Warriors their first lead, 38-37, just five minutes into the second stanza. The game back and forth until
Micah Boone's three off another assist from Hewlett to give Stan State a 62-53 lead with 3:15 left in regulation. An old-fashioned three-point play by Dale Currie capped a 7-0 run by the Penguins to cut the guests' lead to 62-60 with 27 seconds on the clock.
Jeremiah Jones went one-for-two from the charity stripe to increase Stan State's lead to 63-60 with four seconds left in the game. The Penguins' three fell short at the buzzer as the Warriors took the 63-60 non-conference victory.
47-9: Stan State's bench outscored Dominican's 47-9 with
Dontrell Hewlett,
Micah Boone, and
Tony Singleton combining for 36 of those 47 points.
Mahda Fallay had five points and
Jeremiah Jones and
Will Chavarin each had three points. Hewlett was six-for-11 from the field, one-for-four from three-point territory, and one-for-two from the line in 22 minutes. He grabbed three rebounds, dished out three assists, had one steal and one blocked shot. Boone was three-for-eight from the field including connecting three-for-seven from beyond the arc. He went two-for-four from the line while grabbing four rebounds, dishing out an assist and recording a steal. Singleton was three-for-six from three-point land, two-for-three from the line, grabbed three rebounds, dished out an assist and recorded a steal.
TWELVE FROM BEYOND THE ARC: The Warriors went 12-for-29 from beyond the arc.
Tony Singleton was three-for-six and
Micah Boone went three-for-seven to lead the way for Stan State.
Baljot Sahi was two-for-three in his attempts while
Cam Walker,
Dontrell Hewlett, and
Will Chavarin each connected on one of their attempts from three-point land.
DEFENSE: Stan State held the Penguins to just 39.7% shooting from the field including just 14% from beyond the arc.
RON LOGSDON CHALLENGE NEXT: The Warriors will continue their season beginning six-game road trip this Friday-Saturday, November 17-18 in Rohnert Park, Calif., at the Ron Logsdon Basketball Challenge, presented by Cambria Hotel Sonoma Wine Country. They will face Western Oregon on Friday at 5pm and the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday at 4pm.
