HONOLULU, Hawai'i--- Stan State's late fourth quarter rally fall short in the Warriors' 66-61 loss at Hawai'i Paciifc this evening despite
Joia Armstrong's double-double performance. Armstrong scored 21 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and blocked five shots for the visitors for her fourth double-double of her career.
FIRST QUARTER: The first four minutes of the game was even until the Sharks went on a 10-2 run to take a 16-8 lead capped by a Megan Jones' lay-up with 3:23 left in the first quarter. Stan State (2-3) outscored its hosts 4-2 in the final minutes of the quarter to cut the deficit to 18-12 heading into the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER: The Warriors scored the first four points of the second quarter to cut the Sharks' lead to 18-16. A Haley Masaki three capped a 11-0 run by Hawai'i Pacific as the Sharks took a 29-16 lead mid-way through the second ten-minute period. Stan State didn't go away as the Warriors ended the half on a 7-0 run to make it HPU 29, Stan State 23 heading into the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER: A
Taylor Pilot free throw cut the HPU lead to 31-26 three minute into the second half, but Hawai'i Pacific (1-2) outscored its guests 8-1 to take a 39-27 lead at the 5:41 mark of the third quarter. A
Joia Armstrong jumper cut the deficit to 39-31 mid-way through the quarter. That's the closest the Warriors could get the rest of the quarter as the hosts took a 48-38 lead into the final ten-minute period.
FOURTH QUARTER: Hawai'i Pacific increased its lead to 54-41 four minutes into the final quarter on a jumper by Kalina Obrey. Stan State didn't go away as an
Iman Addison trey off a pass from
Taylor Pilot capped a 20-10 run by the Warriors as they take cut the deficit to 64-61 with a little under a minute left in regulation. The Warriors made a stop on defense, but their game tying shot fell short, and Obrey was fouled and sealed the Shark 66-61 victory with two made free throws.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Joia Armstrong recorded her fourth double-double of her career this evening. She scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to go with her five blocked shots in 35 minutes. The junior post player was 10-for-16 from the field including making her only attempt from beyond the arc. Her 21 points was a career high as was her ten field goals made. She tied her career high with five blocked shots.
STREAK SNAPPED: Liliana Marques had her season beginning 17 consecutive free throw streak snapped this evening in her final attempt of the evening. Heading into last season, Marques had made her last 18 free throws in a row. She is now 17-for-18 this season. This evening, Marques finished with 12 points for her fourth game scoring in double digits this season.
POINTS OFF TURNOVERS: Stan State scored 24 points off the 21 turnovers the Warrior defense forced this evening. Of those 24 points, ten came in the fourth quarter. Ten of those turnovers came on steals by the Stan State defense.
Jadyn Patterson had a career high five steals with
Taylor Pilot recording two. Three different Warriors had one steal apiece in
Liliana Marques,
Mya Blake, and
Alexis Woodson.
UP NEXT: The Warriors will stay in Hawai'i for their next two games this weekend. They will participate in the Hoops in Hawai'i Thanksgiving Classic that will take place, Nov. 24-25, at The Shark Tank in Honolulu. Stan State will face NAIA No. 17 Eastern Oregon this Friday, Nov. 24 and Northwestern Oklahoma State this Saturday, Nov. 25. Both games have 1pm (HT) scheduled tip-offs. The Warriors will return home a week from this evening, Tuesday, Nov. 28, for a 5:30pm scheduled non-conference game with Fresno Pacific at The Fitz. Fans bringing a canned food good will receive free admission to the game with the donations going to the Warrior Food Pantry.
