HONOLULU, Hawai'i--- Stan State's defense held the NAIA No. 17 ranked Eastern Oregon Mountaineers to just 39% shooting from the field including 38% from three-point land to key the Warriors' 69-64 overtime victory. The Warriors forced 18 turnovers converted those into 18 points.
FIRST QUARTER: The Warriors started the game on a 17-4 run capped by a
Lyric Richardson lay-up off a pass from
Alexis Woodson in the first seven minutes of the first quarter. Eastern Oregon finished the quarter on a 7-0 run to cut the Warrior lead to 17-11 heading into the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER: Ashley Lewi's jumper off another assist by
Alexis Woodson increased the Warrior lead to 21-14 just two minutes into the new ten-minute period. A Raquel Fehringer lay-up capped a 11-4 run by the Mountaineers as they took a 25-24 lead. A Woodson lay-up gave the Warriors back the lead, 26-25, on Stan State's next possession. Eastern Oregon outscored the Warriors 6-2 in the final two minutes to give the Mountaineers a 31-28 lead heading into the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER: Stan State started the third quarter outscoring the Mountaineers 12-8 to give the Warriors a 40-39 lead at the 4:36 mark of the third quarter. Eastern Oregon increased its lead to 47-44 on a Bayley Brennan lay-up with two minutes left in the quarter. An
Asha Walker jumper off a steal by Jadyn Patters cut EOU's lead to 47-46 heading into the fourth quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER: Liliana Marques scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to give Stan State (3-3) a 51-47 lead one minute into the final quarter. Eastern Oregon came right back and tied the game at 51-51 on two free throws by Brie Holecek. The game went back and forth for the next five minutes until EOU took a 57-54 lead on two more free throws by Holecek. The Warriors retook the lead, 58-57, on two
Asha Walker free throws with 2:30 on the clock. A Haley Robinett lay-up gave the Mountaineers back the lead, 59-58, but a three Marques off a pass from
Jadyn Patterson gave the Warriors a 61-59 lead with just 80 seconds to go in regulation. They didn't hold the lead long as on EOU's next possession the Mountaineers tied the game at 61-61, with forty seconds on the clock. Both teams had chances to win the game, but both of their attempts fell short to send the game into overtime.
OVERTIME: Eastern Oregon scored the first three points of the extra period to take a 63-61 lead. An
Ashley Lewis lay-up off a
Joia Armstrong pass tied the game at 63-63 on the Warriors' next possession with 3:33 to go in the overtime. One minute later, Brie Holecek went one-for-two from the line after she was fouled that gave EOU back the 64-63 lead. With 49 seconds left in the overtime period, Armstrong's lay-up off a pass from Cookie Marques gave Stan State back the lead, 65-64, a lead they would not relinquish. Armstrong went three-for-four from the line and
Talia Maxwell went one-for-two as the Warriors took the 69-64 victory.
THREE IN DOUBLE FIGURES: Stan State had three players score in double figures this afternoon in
Liliana Marques (13 points),
Asha Walker (11 points), and
Ashley Lewis (10 points). The ten points by Lewis was a career high and Walker's 11 points was a season high. Walker added six rebounds and Marques was three-for-six from three-point land and Lewis was five-for-nine from the field.
DEFENSE WINS: The Warriors' defense held EOU to just 39% shooting from the field including 19% from three-point land. Stan State forced 19 turnovers by the Mountaineers and converted them into 18 points. Eight of those 19 turnovers came off eight steals by Stan State.
Jadyn Patterson and
Talia Maxwell led the way each with two. Four Warriors had one steal apiece in
Asha Walker,
Kalyn Harris,
Liliana Marques, and
Ashley Lewis.
37-18: Stan State's bench outscored Eastern Oregon's 37-18 led by
Liliana Marques' 13 points.
Ashley Lewis added ten points while
Joia Armstrong chipped in nine points.
Iman Addison and
Jadyn Patterson combined for five point off the bench for the Warriors.
UP NEXT: The Warriors will face Northwestern Oklahoma State tomorrow afternoon at 1pm (HT) in their final game in the Hoops-in-Hawai'i Thanksgiving Classic in Honolulu. The Rangers will face Chaminade this evening in the second game of the classic. Northwestern Oklahoma State enters the classic with a 4-0 record.
