TURLOCK, Calif.--- The visiting Cal State East Bay Pioneers shot 50% from the field including 58% in the first half to key their 86-76 victory over Stan State in both team's CCAA opener at The Fitz this evening.
Dontrell Hewlett had 19 points to lead the way for the hosts.
John Wade III added 15 points and four steals with
Micah Boone scoring 10 points for the Warriors.
FIRST HALF: Cal State East Bay (4-2, 1-0 CCAA) scored the first seven points of the game in the first three minutes. A Daeshawn Eaton jumper increased the Pioneers' lead to 18-2 at the 14:09 mark of the first half.
Will Chavarin's trey off a pass from
John Wade III capped a 9-2 run by Stan State as the Warriors cut their deficit to 20-11 with twelve minutes left in the half. A
Micah Boone trey off a
Tony Singleton pass cut the Pioneer lead to 25-19 mid-way through the half. An Eaton jumper increased the guests' lead to 37-21. Cal State East Bay took a 49-31 lead with 2:12 on the clock on a Teianao Harde jumper. The Pioneers took a 51-33 lead heading into the locker room on a jumper by Chris James.
SECOND HALF: The guests increased their lead to 53-33 just a minute into the new half. A Payden White jumper increased the Pioneers' lead to 66-43 at the 15:03 mark of the second half.
Will Chavarin's trey off a pass from
Tony Singleton cut the Pioneer lead to 69-54. Cal State East Bay increased its lead to 17 (71-54) on two free throws by White with eight minutes left in the game. Stan State (3-4, 0-1 CCAA) didn't go away as the Warriors cut the deficit to 80-68 o a trey by
Dontrell Hewlett off a pass from
Cam Walker with just 2:40 on the clock. A Grady Lewis jumper gave CSUEB an 84-70 lead at the 1:13 mark of the second half. Stan State outscored the Pioneers 6-2 in the final 73 seconds, but it was a little too late as the guests took the 86-76 CCAA victory.
THREE IN DOUBLE FIGURES: Three Warriors scored in double digits this evening led by
Dontrell Hewlett's 19 points. Hewlett went five-for-nine from the field including three-of-four from three-point land and six-from-nine from the line.
John Wade III added 15 points off the bench to go with his three assists, four steals, and one blocked shot.
Micah Boone added 10 points.
11 TREYS: Stan State connected on eleven of its three-point attempts this evening. This is second most this season by the Warriors. They connected on 12 treys in their 63-60 win at Dominican on November 14.
Dontrell Hewlett had three made treys with
Micah Boone and
Will Chavarin each connecting on two. Four Warriors connected on one trey each in
Jonathan Tchengang,
Cam Walker,
Tony Singleton, and
John Wade III.
UP NEXT: The Warriors will host SF State this Saturday, December 2 at 3pm at The Fitz. The Gators lost 88-71 at Cal State Monterey Bay this evening in Seaside.
