ARCATA, Calif.--- Stan State finished off its final road trip of the regular season with a five-set thriller in Arcata, Calif., this evening at Lumberjack Arena. Cal Poly Humboldt took the five set from the Warriors (13-25, 25-22, 25-13, 28-30, 10-15).
Ellison Weaver and
Haley Burdo each recorded their fourth double-doubles of the season. Weaver had 15 kills and 16 digs while Burdo had 28 assists and 12 digs.
FIRST SET: Cal Poly Humboldt (6-18, 3-13 CCAA) took a 15-8 lead on an Awelina Fakalata kill to begin the match. They increased their lead to 24-11 with the Warriors scoring the next two points to cut the Jack lead to 24-13. Humboldt took the final point on an Avery McIntyre Kill, 25-13.
SECOND SET: The Warriors came out of the intermission and took a 5-2 early lead in the second set. Humboldt scored ten of the next thirteen points to take a 12-8 lead. An
Ellison Weaver kill tied the set at 15-15. The second set went back and forth until the Warriors took a 20-18 lead. The Jacks tied the set at 21-21, but back-to-back kills by
Emily Meyer and
Alex Byrd gave the Warriors a 23-21 lead. The hosts score the next points, but Stan State closed out the set with the final two points, 25-22, and evened the match at 1-1.
THIRD SET: Stan State (8-17, 3-13 CCAA) took a 4-0 lead to begin the third set. Humboldt tie the match at 9-9. The Warriors recorded the next eleven straight points to take a 20-9 lead. The hosts cut the Warrior lead to 22-12, but Stan State finished the set off by recording three of the final four points to take the set 25-13 and gave the guests a 2-1 lead in the match.
FOURTH SET: The next set was even until the Warriors took a 17-12 lead on an
Ellison Weaver kill. A Ryleeh Tualo gave the Jacks a 22-20 lead. The rest of the set was even until the Jacks took the set, 28-26, to even the match at 2-2.
FIFTH SET: For the second time this season, the two teams played a fifth set in their meeting. The Jacks took a 4-0 lead on a Ryleeh Tualo service ace. Stan State took seven of the next nine points to take a 7-6 lead on an
Ellison Weaver kill. Humboldt took a 13-9 lead, but another Weaver kill cut the deficit to 13-10. It was a little too late as the Jacks took the final two points on back-to-back kills by Awelina Fakalata and Elyse McKinney to take the set 15-10 and the match 3-2.
STAT LEADERS FOR STAN STATE: Ellison Weaver had 15 kills to go with
Samaya Royal's 11. She also had two service aces and 16 digs.
Alex Byrd had six total blocks with
Mariah Iosua and Royal each recording three.
Haley Burdo had 28 assists to go with her 12 digs while
Gabby Rawson had 39 digs.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Ellison Weaver and
Haley Burdo each recorded their fourth double-double of the season. Weaver had 15 kills to go with her 16 digs. Burdo had 28 assists to go along with her 12 digs. For their careers, Burdo has 28 and Weaver has eight.
UP NEXT: Stan State will finish off its 2023 regular season with a pair of home matches on November 10 and 11. The Warriors will host Cal State Los Angeles at 5pm on Friday, November 10 and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Senior Day on Saturday, November 11 at 2pm. Prior to the match on Saturday, Stan State will recognize its two seniors in
Eyriana Eatmon and
Samaya Royal.
