Men’s Basketball to Begin Regular Season at PacWest/CCAA Conference Challenge

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State Warriors will begin their 2023-24 regular season with a pair of non-conference games at the PacWest/CCAA Conference Challenge at Golden Gym on the campus of Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego this Friday-Saturday, November 10-11.  The Warriors will face No. 11 Point Loma Sea Lions at 7pm this Friday.  They will end their weekend with a 5pm game against Fresno Pacific on Saturday.  
 
2022-23 WARRIORS:  Stan State finished the 2022-23 season with a 10-18 overall record and an 8-14 CCAA record.  The Warriors finished in a four-way tie for ninth place in the CCAA regular season standings.  Ten players return from last year's team in Tony Singleton, Jeremiah Jones, Micah Boone, Daniel Ameyaw, Noel Alexander Jr., Baljot Sahi, Mahda Fallay, Isaiah Jones, Jordan Smith, and Drew Nelson.  Singleton started in the Warriors' first five games before suffering a season ending injury.  The 2021-22 All-CCAA honoree averaged 12.8 points and shot 47.9% from the field including 45.7% from three-point range before suffering the season ending injury.  In 2021-22, Singleton averaged 13.6 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game.  
 
Jeremiah Jones is back for Stan State after scoring 126 points and dishing out 27 assists in 23 games. Ameyaw is back for his sophomore season after grabbing 74 rebounds and shooting 54.7% from the field in 25 games.  Boone saw action in eight games and shot 50% from the field and scored 31 points.  Alexander played in 12 games and scored 42 points and grabbed 16 rebounds.  Sahi shot 56.5% from three-point range in 13 games while Fallay shot 48% from the field in 20 games.  Playing in 22 games, Isaiah Jones scored 48 points for the Warriors. Smith and Nelson each redshirted for the Warriors during the 2022-23 campaign.
 
NINE NEWCOMERS:  Of the nine newcomers for the 2023-24 Warriors, eight are transfers.  
 
John Wade III transferred to Stan State from Cal State Northridge. During the 2022-23 season as a Matador, Wade averaged 1.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 12 minutes per game.  Prior to Northridge, Wade played at Contra Costa College where he earned CCCMBCA All-State honors and First Team All-Conference while averaging 14.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 2.5 steals per game.
 
Jonathan Tchengang is a junior transfer from Pasadena City College where he averaged 13.8 points and 8.5 rebounds last season and shot 46% from the field.  He was named to the First Team All-SCC North and Honorable Mention All-State Teams.  Tchengang helped lead Pasadena City College to a 22-9 overall record.
 
Dontrell Hewlett is a junior transfer from Odessa College, where he averaged 9.6 point per game last season in the 34 games, he played in.  During the 2021-22 season, he played in 34 games and averaged 7.8 points per game. 
 
Cam Walker transferred to Stan State from Porterville College he was named to the First Team All-Conference and First Team All-Conference Defense in 2021-22.  The Turlock native dished out 230 assists and helped lead Porterville to a 37-21 record.  The four-year letter-winner at Turlock High, was a two-time Team Most Valuable Player.  He was a 1,000-point scorer at Turlock and finished second all-time scorer.  
 
Will Chavarin is a sophomore transfer from Cal Poly Pomona where he played in 12 games in 2021-22 and scored 22 points.  He is a 2019 graduate of Oakland's Bishop O'Dowd where he was a Second Team All-State honoree.  
 
Kyle Render is a junior transfer from Mt. San Jacinto College, where he averaged 14.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 47% from the field including 40% from three-point range.  
 
Cheikh Gueye is a transfer from Mendocino College where she shot 50% from the field last season while averaging 6.0 points and 6.2 rebounds per game in 2022-23.  He averaged 14.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game during his senior season at St. Joseph Notre Dame High School.
 
Jason Zimmer transferred to Stan State from Los Medanos College where he was a 2023 Bay Valley First Team All-League honoree.  He was a two-time Second Team All-League honoree at Clayton Valley Charter High School.  In 2022, he was named the Best Defensive Player.
 
Lloyd French is a 6-4 freshman guard from Thomas Downey High School in Modesto.  He earned First Team All-District Honors and was the team's and league's Most Valuable Player.  He scored 1300 points and grabbed 530 rebounds during his career at Downey.
 
STAN STATE HEAD COACH PAUL TREVOR: Coach Trevor enters his seventh year as the head coach at Stan State and 14th year overall coaching.  He is 171-156 in his fourteen years including 54-60 on the sidelines in Turlock.  During his 14-year coaching career, Trevor has coached 27 All-CCAA honorees including eight First Team selections and one CCAA Newcomer of the Year.  Two players have been named to the preseason All-American Teams with one receiving All-American honors and three All-Region honors.  In 2016-17 at SF State, he guided the Gators the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in 23 years and he was named the NABC West Region Co-Coach of the Year while the Gators were ranked  No. 22 in the end of the season national NABC rankings.  
 
NO. 11 POINT LOMA:  The Sea Lions finished the season 29-4 overall and 20-0 in the PacWest.  They lost in the 2022-23 NCAA Division II West Regional Championship game 89-83 to Cal State San Bernardino.  Junior Luke Haupt averaged 11.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game while shooting 52.8% last season.  Jake Lifgren returns for Point Loma after averaging 5.0 points per game in 2022-23. 
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  Point Loma leads the all-time series with the Warriors 3-2. The Sea Lions won last season 73-62 in Turlock.  Stan State's last victory over Point Loma was a 93-72 victory December 30, 1983, in Turlock.  The teams faced each other during the 1976-77, 1978-79, 1983-84, 2021-22, and 2022-23 seasons.
 
FRESNO PACIFIC:  The Sunbirds went 9-18 overall and 6-14 in the PacWest during the 2022-23 season.  Kyle Monk is back after averaging 7.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.  He made 32 three's during the 2022-23 season. Isaac Peralta averaged 7.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per game and shot 46.5% from the field.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  Stan State leads the all-time series 5-3.  The Warriors defeated Fresno Pacific on Nov. 12, 2022, 65-57 in Turlock.  Tony Singleton was one of three Stan State players in double digits in scoring with 12 points.  The Warriors forced 18 turnovers by the Sunbirds and held them to 36% shooting from the field.

CCAA/HOME OPENER: The Warriors will have their 2023-24 CCAA and home opener on Thursday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m., when they host Cal State East Bay at The Fitzpatrick Arena.  
 
UP NEXT:  Stan State continues its season beginning six-game road trip with a non-conference game on Tuesday, November 14 for a 7:30pm scheduled tip-off in San Rafael against Dominican University.  The Warriors will travel to Rohnert Park, November 17-18 to participate in the Ron Logsdon Basketball Challenge, Presented by Cambria Hotel Sonoma Wine Country on the campus of Sonoma State.  They will face Western Oregon out of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) on November 17 at 5pm.  Stan State will take on the University of Sioux Falls (SD) out of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
