Key NCAA DII West Region Matchups Highlights Busy Week for the Warriors

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State will look to continues it winning ways this week as the Warriors host two important NCAA Division II West Region non-conference games this Thursday and Sunday, December 14 and 17.  The Warriors have won their last five games in a row to improve to 8-4 overall and 4-0 in the CCAA.  They will host Seattle Pacific (Thurs., Dec. 14, 5:30pm) and Alaska Anchorage (Sun., Dec. 17, 2pm).  Stan State will travel to Reno, Nev., in between the two non-conference games for an exhibition game with the University of Nevada on Sat., Dec. 16 at 1pm. 
 
WARRIORS:  Stan State is 8-4 overall and 4-0 in the CCAA after going 2-0 this weekend on the road at Cal State Dominguez Hills (65-59) and Cal State Los Angeles (62-61).  The Warriors are averaging 67 points per game while giving up 64.1 points per game.  They are being outrebounded 41.5 to 39.7.  Mya Blake leads the way with her 13.2 scoring average followed by Liliana Marques at 12.4 points per game.  Marques has made a team leading 22 treys and connected on a team high 84.8% of her attempts from the charity stripe.  Taylor Pilot leads the team with her 38 assists and 26 steals. Lyric Richardson leads the team with her 50% shooting from the field and Jadyn Patterson is shooting a team high 51.5% from three-point land.  Joia Armstrong leads Stan State with her 6.1 rebounding average and 12 blocked shots.
 
STAN STATE HEAD COACH WAYMAN STRICKLAND: Coach Strickland enters his twelfth season at the helm of the Warrior women's basketball team.  He is 118-166 in his coaching stint at Stan State.  In 2013-14, he led the Warriors to one of the best turn-around seasons in program history, going from 2-25 to 13-13 and just missing out on the CCAA tournament.  In February of 2017, the Warriors posted their first postseason victory since 1990 and advanced to the CCAA semifinals.  He has coached 23 All-CCAA honorees including two First Team selections.  Zahria Hendrix (2017-18) and Ana Burch (2013-14) were CCAA Freshman of the Year honorees.  Prior to his arrival on the CSU Stanislaus campus, Strickland was the assistant coach for the women's basketball program at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton between 2009 and 2012. Before his at Delta College, Strickland was the varsity girls coach (2007-09) and varsity boys assistant coach (2002-07) at Stockton's Edison High School.  Strickland spent nine years as a professional player in Europe and Asia.  His accolades include being named the top point guard in the Asian Basketball Championships three times (1996-98). He was the most valuable player of the 1997 Asian Basketball Championships. He was a four-year starter at the University of San Diego from 1988 to 1992, when he amassed 1,040 career points. Currently, he still holds the third spot in the USD record book with 408 assists.

2-0 WEEKEND:  Stan State went 2-0 on the road last weekend in Los Angeles to improve to 4-0 in the CCAA.  The Warriors started the weekend with a 65-59 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills. They came back and defeated Cal State Los Angeles 62-61.  In the two games, the Warriors averaged 63.5 points per game while giving up 60 points per game.  They were outrebounded 50 to 38.5.  Mya Blake led the way with her 16.0 scoring average ad eight treys made.  Liliana Marques averaged 12.0 points per game and was a perfect seven-for-seven from the charity stripe.  Jadyn Patterson shot a team leading 63.6% from the field including 57% from three-point land.  Aunika Hornung averaged a team high 8.5 rebounds per game.  Hornung and Joia Armstrong each blocked a team leading three shots.   Taylor Pilot recorded a team high seven steals.  Blake and Marques each dished out five assists.
 
ALL ALONE IN FIRST PLACE:  With their two wins last week and other teams losing, Stan State sits all alone in first place with its 4-0 CCAA record heading into the Holiday Break.  Sonoma State and Cal State San Marcos are tied for first place each with a 3-1 conference record.  Six teams are tied for fourth place all with a 2-2 record in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Los Angeles, Chico State, Cal Poly Humboldt, Cal State San Bernardino, and Cal State East Bay.  The Warriors return to CCAA action on New Year's Eve in Seaside, Calif., for. A 1pm match-up with Cal State Monterey Bay.  
 
FIVE IN A ROW:  The Warriors have won their last five games in a row for the first time since the 2021-22 season.  That season, the Warriors won nine games in row dating from Nov. 19, 2021, to Dec. 19, 2021.  They had their streak snapped in a 67-58 loss at Chico State on Jan. 2, 2022.  During the streak, the Warriors are averaging 67.6 points per game while giving up 59 points per game.  They are outrebounding their opponents 42.2 to 42 while holding them to 33% shooting from the field including 30% from three-point land.  Stan State is forcing 20.8 turnovers per game during that span with 12.2 coming from steals.  Mya Blake (13.4 ppg) and Liliana Marques (11.4 ppg) lead the way.  Taylor Pilot has dished out a team leading 15 assists and recorded a team high 16 steals.  Auniika Hornung has blocked a team high nine shots and averaging a team leading 7.5 rebounds per game.  Jadyn Patterson is shooting a team high 58% from the field including 62.5% from three-point land.  Marques is shooting 81.8% from the line in the five games.  
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLES:  Three Warriors have recorded double-doubles this season in Taylor Pilot, Joia Armstrong, and Lyric Richardson.   Pilot recorded a double-double in the Warriors' game versus Simon Fraser on Nov. 18.  Pilot scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.  Armstrong recorded her first double-double of the season in the Warriors' game at Hawai'i Pacific on Nov. 21.  She scored 21 points and 11 rebounds.  She went 10-for-16 from the field, blocked five shots and made her only attempt from beyond the arc. Richardson recorded her first double-double of her career in the Warrior uniform.
 
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM:  Stan State junior transfer Mya Blake was named to the Warrior Classic that took place Nov. 17-18 at The Fitzpatrick Arena.  Blake led the Warriors to a 1-1 weekend while averaging 14.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game.  She had a +2.0 assist/turnover ratio in the Warriors' two games.  For the weekend, Blake shot 46% from the field including connecting on two of her eight attempts from beyond the arc.  She was a perfect two-for-two from the line.  Liliana Marques was named to the 2023 Outrigger Hoops in Hawai'i Classic All-Tournament Team. Marques averaged 19.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in the Warriors' two games in the classic including scoring a career high 25 points in Stan State's game versus Northwestern Oklahoma State.  Marques shot 48% from the field including 52.6% (10-for-19) from three-point land.  The Sacramento native was four-for-six from the line to go with her three rebounds, two assists, and one steal.  
 
NATIONAL LEADERS:  Taylor Pilot is 25th in the nation with her 26 steals this season.  The Warriors as a team are 19thin the nation with their 37.2% shooting form three-point land. 
 
CCAA LEADERS:  Stan State is in the top half of the CCAA in nine team statistical categories.  The Warriors lead the CCAA with their 36% field goal percentage defense.  They are second in three-point field goal percentage (37.2%) and tied for second in three-point field goal percentage defense (27%).  Stan State is third in blocked shots (3.92), fifth in three's made per game (6.7) and scoring defense (64.1).  The Warriors are sixth in scoring margin (+2.9), rebounding (39.7), and offensive rebounding (13.2).  
 
Four players are in the top ten in ten individual categories. Taylor Pilot is second in steals (26) and assists (38).  She is third in steals per game (2.6), fourth in assists per game (3.8), and sixth in assist/turnover ratio (+1.3).  Liliana Marques is fourth in free throw percentage (84.8%), fifth in threes made (22), and tied for seventh in three-point field goals made per game (1.8).  Mya Blake is seventh in field goal percentage (44.7%), tied for seventh in threes made per game (1.8), and eighth in total threes (18).  Joia Armstrong is fourth with her 12 blocked shots and fifth with her 1.0 blocked shot per game average.  
 
FALCONS IN REVIEW:  Seattle Pacific is 4-5 overall and 2-0 in the GNAC heading into its trip to California.  The Falcons have won their last three games in a row with victories over Alaska (70-43), Alaska Anchorage (62-59), and George Fox (64-44).  They are averaging 56.9 points per game while giving up 61.4 points per game.  SPU is outrebounding its opponents 36.2 to 33.7.  Olivia Mayer leads the team with her 12.9 scoring average, 8.0 rebounding average, 11 blocked shots, and 12 steals.  Schuyler Berry leads the team with her 52.5% shooting from the field.  Hunter Beirne leads the Falcons with her 10 treys made, 35.7% shooting from three-point land, 23 assists, and 83% shooting from the line.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  Stan State leads the all-time series with Seattle Pacific 2-1.  The Warriors won the last two meetings including last year's 63-62 on Dec. 17, 2022, at Seattle Pacific.  Ashmeen Sran had 14 points and Liliana Marques scored the game-winning bucket on a buzzer beater.
 
NEVADA: The Wolf Pack is 5-5 overall after losing their last three games in a row to UC Santa Barbara (73-66 overtime), Weber State (57-55), and California (76-49).  They are averaging 62.3 points per game while giving up 64.5 points per game.  Audrey Rodden leads the team with her 12.8 scoring average and 30 steals.  Lexie Givens leads Nevada with her 6.0 rebounding average and 16 blocked shots.  Dymonique Maxie has dished out a team high 23 assists.  Gabby Guere has made a team leading 12 treys and a team high 44% of her attempts from beyond the arc.
 
EXHBITION GAME:  Stan State's game with Nevada will be an exhibition game for the Warriors.
 
ALASKA ANCHORAGE:  The Seawolves are 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the GNAC.  They won both their games this past weekend over Clarion at home 87-43 and 78-33 to snap a four-game losing streak.  Alaska Anchorage is averaging 73.1 points per game while giving up 60.4 points per game.  The Seawolves are outrebounding their opponents 38.7 to 34.7. Three players are averaging double figures in scoring in Tori Hollingshead (12.7 ppg), Jazzpher Evans (12.7 ppg), and Senya Rabouin (12.6 ppg).  Holllingshead leads the team with her 6.9 rebounding average, 17 blocked shots, and 58% shooting from the field.  Rabouin has a team leading 41 assists and 19 steals.  Elaina Mack has made a team high 21 treys and Rabouin has connected on a team high 39.6% of her attempts from three-point land and 81.8% from the charity stripe.  
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  Alaska Anchorage has won all the meetings between the two teams to take a 3-0 lead into the all-time series.  They won the last meeting 91-42 in Anchorage on Nov. 14, 2015.
