Defense Keys Warriors’ Sixth Straight Victory

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State forced 27 turnovers including 13 by steals to key its 70-66 victory over the visiting Seattle Pacific Falcons this evening in a non-conference game at The Fitz.  Four Warriors combined for 42 of their 70 points in Mya Blake, Aunika Hornung, Liliana Marques, and Taylor Pilot.  The hosts picked up their sixth straight victory to improve to 9-4.  
 
FIRST QUARTER:  The first ten-minute period was even until Aunika Hornung's lay-up off an assist from Alexis Woodson gave the hosts an 8-6 lead with three minutes left in the first quarter. Seattle Pacific (4-6) outscored the Warriors 6-4 in the final minutes of the quarter to tie the game at 12-12 heading into the second quarter.    
 
SECOND QUARTER:  Alexis Woodson's lay-up off a pass from Aunika Hornung capped a mini 5-0 run by the Warriors to begin the second quarter as they took a 17-12 lead.  Iman Addison's lay-up increased the hosts' lead to 21-13 mid-way through the second quarter.  Seattle Pacific outscored Stan State 8-0 to cut the Warrior lead to 23-21 with 2:48 left in the half.  A trey by Mya Blake off a Talia Maxwell gave the hosts a 26-21 lead at the 2:33 mark of the quarter.  SPU tied the game at 28-28 on a trey by Grace Leasure, but Stan State finished the half outscoring its guests 5-0 to take a 31-26 lead heading into the locker room. 
 
THIRD QUARTER:  Mya Blake's trey off a pass from Liliana Marques capped a quarter beginning 11-6 run to increase Stan State's lead to 42-32 three and a half minutes into the new stanza.  Taylor Pilot's lay-up increased the hosts' lead to 51-40 with just 1:12 left in the third quarter.  Seattle Pacific cut the Warrior lead to 52-46 on a lay-up by Olivia Mayer, but a three by Marques gave Stan State a 55-46 lead heading into the final quarter.  
 
FOURTH QUARTER:  Schuyler Berry's lay-up with 7:38 on the clock cut Stan State's lead to 57-53.  Two free throws by Mya Blake increased the Warrior lead to 59-53.  The Falcons went on a 9-0 run in the next four minutes capped by two Berry free throws as they took a 62-61 lead.  Jadyn Patterson's trey off an assist from Aunika Hornung gave the hosts back the lead 64-62 with just 2:20 left in regulation.  There were two more ties until a Taylor Pilot free throw with just 26 seconds to go in the game gave Stan State a 67-66 lead.  The Warriors sealed the 70-66 victory going three-for-from the line by Liliana Marques (one-for-two) and Pilot (two-for-two).
 
DEFENSE:  Stan State forced 27 turnovers by the Falcons.  13 of those came on steals by the Warriors.  Mya Blake and Taylor Pilot each had three steals with Aunika Hornung and Kalyn Harris each with two.  Three Stan State players had one steal each in Liliana Marques, Asha Walker, and Ashmeen Sran.  
 
38-18 BENCH:  The Warriors' bench outscored Seattle Pacific's ben 38-18 with Aunika Hornung and Taylor Pilot each scoring 10 points.  Asha Walker added seven points while Kalyn Harris scored five points.  Three Warriors had two points each in Alexis Woodson, Ashley Lewis, and Ashmeen Sran
 
NOW AT SIX:  Stan State's winning streak is at six heading into this final non-conference game of the regular season this Sunday, December 17 at 2pm versus Alaska Anchorage.  The last time the Warriors won six games in a row was during the 2021-222 season when Stan State won nine games in a row.
 
UP NEXT:  Stan State will travel to Reno, Nev., for a 1pm exhibition game at the University of Nevada on Saturday, December 16.  The Warriors' last game before the Holiday Break will be Sunday, December 17 at 2pm against Alaska Anchorage.  They will return to CCAA play on New Year's Eve in Seaside, Calif., for a 1pm contest with Cal State Monterey Bay.
