Stan State's Rally Falls Short in Heart Breaker in Seaside

SEASIDE, Calif.---  Stan State saw it second half rally fall short in a 63-62 nail biting loss to the hosts, Cal State Monterey Bay Otters, this afternoon in a CCAA match-up at The Kelp Bed.  The Warriors had a chance to win it at the end, but the Otters' defense forced a turnover and Jailen Nelson went one-for-two from the line for the one-point victory.  Dontrell Hewlett led the way for the Warriors with 15 points to go with his three assists, four steals, and six rebounds.
 
FIRST HALF: Cal State Monterey Bay (4-6, 2-3 CCAA) jumped out to a 15-6 lead on a Charles Johnston lay-up in the first six and a half minutes of the game.  Jeremiah Jones' free throw cut the Warrior deficit to 15-10.  The Otters increased their lead to 33-18 with three minutes left in the half on a Jordan Archie jumper with just three minutes left in the half.  Madha Fallay's lay-up off a Dontrell Hewlett assist capped 9-2 run by the Warriors as they cut the Otter lead to 35-27 heading into the locker room.
 
SECOND QUARTER:  Twice in the first two minutes of the second half Stan State (4-7, 1-4 CCAA) cut the Otter lead to just five including 37-32 on a Dontrell Hewlett jumper.  CSUMB increased its lead back to double digits, 43-32.  Tony Singleton's jumper capped a 12-2 run by the Warriors to make it a one-point game (45-44) at the 13:13 mark of the second half.  Jailen Nelson's jumper gave CSUMB a 54-46 lead with eight minutes to go in the game.  Stan State came right back and went on a 8-0 run to tie the game at 54-54 on a Daniel Ameyaw lay-up off an assist from Cam Walker at the 7:31 mark.  John Wade III gave the Warriors their first lead, 57-54, on a three off a pass from Hewlett.  The game went back and forth until the Otters took a 62-59 lead with just 92 seconds to go in regulation.  An old-fashioned three-point play by Hewlett tied the game at 62-62 on the Warriors' next possession.  Stan State had a chance to take the lead in the final seconds by Nelson stole the ball and was fouled with just one second on the clock.  He won the game for the Otters as he went one-for-two from the line to give CSUMB the 63-62 victory.
 
HEWLETT:  Dontrell Hewlett scored 15 points to lead the way for the Warriors.  He added four steals and three assists while grabbing six rebounds in 34 minutes. 
 
JUST MISSED A DOUBLE-DOUBLE:  Daniel Ameyaw missed recording his fourth double-double this afternoon by four points.  He grabbed 13 rebounds and scored six points to go with his two steals.
 
20/19/13: The Warriors scored 19 points off the 20 turnover their forced this afternoon.  13 of those came on steals with Dontrell Hewlett's four steals leading the way.  John Wade III added three steals with Jonathan Tchengang and Daniel Ameyaw each recording two steals.  Jeremiah Jones and Tony Singleton each had one steal.
 
13/10:  Stan State had 13 assists with ten turnovers this evening.  Cam Walker led the way with four assists while John Wade III and Dontrell Hewlett each with three assists.  Three Warriors had one assist apiece in Tony Singleton, Isaiah Jones, and Jonathan Tchengang.
 
UP NEXT:  The Warriors will return home for a pair of games in the New Year.  They will host Cal State San Marcos this Thursday, January 4 at 7:30pm and Sonoma State this Saturday, January 6 at 3pm.
