Men’s Basketball Drop 65-63 Nail Biter at CSUDH


CARSON, Calif.--  Stan State started its four-game road trip with a 65-63 heartbreaking loss in Carson to the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (7-1, 3-0 CCAA).  The Warriors led 61-46 with six minutes left in the game, but the Toros used a 19-2 run to end the game to take the 65-63 CCAA victory at the Torodome.  Four Warriors scored in double digits led by Tony Singleton's season high 18 points. 
 
FIRST HALF:  The Warriors built an 8-5 early lead on a jumper by John Wade III.  Cal State Dominguez Hills took a 12-11 lead on a Jacob Washington jumper mid-way through the first half.  Wade's tip-in capped a 6-0 min-run by the visitors as they took a 17-12 lead. The Toros came right back with an 8-0 run of their own to take a 20-17 lead with 4:45 left in the half.  Stan State finished the half outscoring the Toros 10-6 to take a 27-26 lead on a Jonathan Tchengang lay-up off a Wade pass heading into the locker room.
 
SECOND HALF: Stan State (4-5, 1-2 CCAA) started the second half outscoring the Toros 19-8  to take a 46-34 lead on a trey by Tony Singleton off a pass from Dontrell Hewlett five minutes into the half.  The hosts cut the Warriors' lead to 49-43 on a lay-up by Jakob Alumudun at the 11:03 mark of the half.  Singleton's trey off a John Wade III assist capped a 12-3 run by the Warriors as they increased their lead to 61-46 with just six minutes left in regulation.  CSUDH came right back and cut the guests' lead to 61-59 with a little under three minutes to go in the game.  Stan State went two-for-four from the line on its next two possessions to take a 63-62 lead with 83 seconds left on the clock.  Cal State Dominguez Hills scored the next three points to take a 65-63 lead with 27 seconds left in the game.  Stan State had a chance to win the game, but its shot fell short as the buzzer sounded and CSUDH took the 65-63 victory.
 
FOUR OF FIVE: Four of the Warriors' five starters scored in double figures this evening led by Tony Singleton's season high 18 points.  Singleton tied his career high with six treys made tonight.  He also had four assists to go with his two steals and one blocked shot.  Dontrell Hewlett added 12 points with Jonathan Tchengang and John Wade III scoring 11 points and 10 rebounds respectively.
 
BATTLE OF THE BOARDS:  Stan State won the battle of the boards this evening 45-38 led by Daniel Ameyaw's 11 rebounds.  John Wade III grabbed a career high nine rebounds while Jonathan Tchengang had six rebounds and Dontrell Hewlett grabbed five rebounds.  Cam Walker had four rebounds off the bench for the Warriors. 
 
UP NEXT:  The Warriors will continue their four-game road trip this Saturday, December 9 for a 3pm CCAA contest in Los Angeles against Cal State Los Angeles.  The Golden Eagles defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 82-62 this evening.  After Saturday, the Warriors will travel to Stockton, Calif., for their final exhibition game of the season on Monday, December 18 at 7pm against the University of the Pacific.  They will return to CCAA action on New Year's Eve for a 3pm contest in Seaside, Calif., against Cal State Monterey Bay.
