CARSON, Calif.-- Stan State (7-4, 3-0 CCAA) used a strong first half in which the Warriors outscored their hosts 39-22 to key their 65-59 road victory at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Warriors held the Toros to just 29% shooting including 23% from three-point range while forcing 20 turnovers in the road win.
FIRST QUARTER: Jadyn Patterson's trey off an assist from
Mya Blake capped a 7-0 run by the Warriors to begin the game. A trey by Blake off a pass from
Taylor Pilot increased the guests' lead to 17-8 with three minute to go in the quarter. Kylee Edgar's jumper capped a 6-2 run by Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-6, 0-3 CCAA) to cut the visitors' lead to 19-14 heading into the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER: Stan State started the second ten-period on an 8-0 run capped by an
Alexis Woodson trey off another
Taylor Pilot assist to increase the Warriors' lead to 27-14 just two minutes into the quarter.
Aunika Hornung's jumper off an
Asha Walker pass increased Stan State's lead to 36-19 with just two minutes left in the half.
Mya Blake's trey at the buzzer off a
Lyric Richardson pass gave the Warriors a 39-22 lead heading into the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER: Twice the Warriors increased their lead to 18 including on a lay-up by
Joia Armstrong off a
Liliana Marques assist, 44-26, just two minutes into the second half. Stan State kept its lead around 18 the whole quarter including, 53-35, on a
Talia Maxwell lay-up to end the quarter off another Marques pass.
FOURTH QUARTER: The defending CCAA and NCAA West Region Champions, Cal State Dominguez Hills, started the final quarter on a 20-2 run to cut the Warrior lead to 55-44 mid-way through the quarter. Stan State scored the next three points including on a
Taylor Pilot lay-up off a
Mya Blake pass to give the visitors a 58-44 lead with four minutes left on the clock. Cal State Dominguez Hills kept chipping away and the Toros cut the Warrior lead to 61-56 on a free throw by Nala Williams with 1:43 to go in regulation.
Aunika Hornung and Blake went a combined three-for-four from the line in the next 60 seconds to increase Stan State's lead to 64-56. The Toros did not go away as a trey by Kylee Edgar cut the Stan State lead to 64-59. Blake's free throw with a second to go sealed the 65-59 Warrior road victory.
FIRST TIME 2021-22: The last time the Warriors started CCAA play 3-0 was during the 2021-22 season when they finished with a 12-10 record including going 7-9 in the CCAA. That season they started with two victories over Chico State (68-64), Cal Poly Pomona (59-58), and Cal State San Bernardino (61-48). They had two more victories until the Warriors lost 67-58 at Chico State on January 2, 2022.
DEFENSE: Once again, the Warriors defense played a key role in their fourth straight victory. The Warriors held the Toros to just 29% shooting from the field including just 23% from three-point land. They forced 20 turnovers by the Toros including 14 by steals.
Mya Blake and
Taylor Pilot each had three steals with
Liliana Marques and
Aunika Hornung recording two. Four Warriors had one steal apiece in
Ashmeen Sran,
Kalyn Harris,
Iman Addison, and
Joia Armstrong.
BLOCK THAT SHOT: Stan State had 10 blocked shots as a team this evening.
Joia Armstrong led the way with three with
Aunika Hornung and
Iman Addison each blocking two shots. The trio of
Mya Blake,
Liliana Marques, and
Lyric Richardson each had one blocked shot.
ONE OF TWO: There are only two undefeated CCAA teams heading into Saturday's games. Stan State and Cal State San Marcos each are 3-0 after this evening's games. The Cougars defeated Cal Poly Humboldt 57-43.
UP NEXT: Stan State will finish off its weekend with a 1pm starting CCAA game in Los Angeles this Saturday against Cal State Los Angeles. The Golden Eagles defeated Cal State Monterey Bay this evening 81-53. After Saturday's game, the Warriors will return home to host Seattle Pacific in a non-conference game on Thursday, December 14 at 5:30pm in their Ugly Christmas Sweater Game. They will then travel to Reno, Nev., for a 1pm exhibition game at the University of Nevada Reno. Stan State's final game before the Holiday Break will be on Sunday, December 17 at 2pm for a non-conference game with Alaska Anchorage.
