Stan State Splits with The Hawks in Home Opener

TURLOCK, Calif.---Stan State Warriors split their non-conference doubleheader this afternoon with the visiting Holy Names Hawks in their home opener taking the opener 10-4 but falling the night cap 7-4.   Flavio Perez went two-for-three,  driving in five runs and scoring a run in the opener.  Perez had two doubles to lead the way for the Warriors.  Maxwell Pappas (1-0) picked up the in in the start, pitching five innings of two hit ball, giving up two runs, striking out six and walking one.  Holy Names took the night cap 7-4 despite Perez going two-for-four with two runs batted in with a solo home run.

 GAME NO. 1:  Holy Names (4-2) took a 2-0 lead with a two-run first inning.  The Warriors came right back and tied the game with a two-run bottom of the first inning.  Flavio Perez walked after JD Madrigal tripled.  Both Madrigal and Perez scored on a two-out two=double by Mac Cabero to tie the game at 2-2.  The Warriors took the 3-2 lead on a two-out run scoring double by Kyle Rachels which scored by Ryan Leonesio who reached on a two-out double.  The Warriors increased their lead to 6-2 with a three-run fifth keyed by a two-ruin single by Perez. 
Stan State (2-1) increased its lead to 8-2 with a two-run sixth inning capped by a sacrifice fly by Perez.  The Warriors added two insurance run sin the eighth inning on a two-run double by Perez. 
Holy Names scored twice in the top of the ninth to make the final 10-4.

OFFENSE: Stan State had 10 hits in game one paced by the trio of Flavio Perez, Tyler Van Dyk and Ryan Leonesio who went a combined six-for-11, driving in six runs and scoring three runs.  Kyle Rachels went three-for-four with z run batted in and two runs scored.

PITCHING: Maxwel Pappas improved to 1-0 , pitching five innings of two-hit ball, giving up two runs, striking out six and walking two.  LaKeal Morris and Patrick Sweeney pitched four innings of relief, giving up two hits and two runs while striking out three and walking two.

GAME TWO: The night cap was scoreless until the Holy Names' fourth.  The Hawks took a 3-0 lead two-out bases clearing double by Alex Bueno. Flavio Perez's solo home run to lead off the fourth to cut the Warrior deficit to 3-1. 

Stan State cut the Hawk lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth.  Ryan Leonesio had a two-tout triple and scored on a wild pitch. 

Holy Names broke the game open with a four-run seventh as the Hawks scored four runs on just two hits and three Warrior errors to take a 7-2 lead.

The Warriors cut the Hawk lead to 7-4 with a two-run eighth inning.  Rachels had a one-out walk and went to second on a single by Jonluke GoldmanJD Madrigal walked to load the bases.  Stan State cut the Hawk lead to 7-4 on a two ground out runs batted in by Perez and Cabero.

Holy Names' duo of Matt Freeman and Casey Candiotti shut down the Warriors to preserve the 7-4 victory.  Nicholas Martez (2-0) recorded the win, pitching seven innings giving up five hits and two runs, striking out four and walking one.  Candiotti recorded his second save by pitching a scoreless ninth.

PEREZ: Flavio Perez went two-for-four with two runs batted in and a run scored. For Stan State.  He also had a solo home run.

UP NEXT: The two teams will conclude the four-game series with a 1pm starting doubleheader in Oakland on Saturday, February 11.
