ALAMEDA, Calif.--- Stan State split its second consecutive doubleheader today with the Holy Names Hawks won game one today 14-4 but lost the night cap 3-2 on a two-out walk-off single by the Hawks.
Tyler Van Dyk went two-for-five with a run scored and a grand slam home run while
Flavio Perez had four hits, drove in three runs and scored twice for the Warriors.
Casey Carr improved to 2-0 with the win in the start while
Austin Balentine pitched four scoreless innings of one hit ball for the save.
JD Madrigal had three of the Warriors' five hits and drove in one of their two runs in the night cap.
Anthony Ramirez suffered the loss in relief.
GAME ONE: Holy Names (5-3) took a 3-0 lead with a three run first inning. The Hawks scored all of their runs after Jaime Garcia reached on a Warrior error which brought in Matthew Den Hartzog, Jesus Hernandez and Garcia. The Warriors cut the Hawk lead to 3-2 with a two-run second inning.
Flavio Perez had a lead-off double. Still with no outs,
Danny Murphy reached on an error. Both runners advanced a base on a passed ball and scored on a two-run single by
Robert Valdivia.
The score remained 4-2 until Stan State's six-run sixth inning. Perez started the scoring for the guests on a run scoring single which scored
Jonluke Goldman.
JD Madrigal scored when
Mac Cabero drew a bases loaded walk.
Tyler Van Dyk hit his first home run of the season, a grand slam, to give the Warriors the 8-4 lead.
Stan State (3-2) added three more runs in the eighth to increase its lead to 11-4. The Warriors added three more in the ninth to take a 14-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
Austin Balentine pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the 14-4 Warrior victory.
HITTING STARS: Flavio Perez went four-for-five with three runs batted in while scoring twice. He hits second double of the season and had a sacrifice fly.
Tyler Van Dyk went two-for-five runs bated in and a run scored. Van Dyk hit his first home run of the season, a grand slam in the sixth.
PITCHERS OF RECORD: Casey Carr (2-0) picked up the win in his first start of the season. He pitched five innings, giving up six hits, four runs (three earned) while striking out one and walking three.
Austin Balentine recorded his first save by pitching four scoreless innings of relief, giving up one hit, striking out four and walking two.
GAME TWO: The night cap was a pitcher's duel between the two teams' pitching staffs. The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Kyle Rachels had a lead-off double, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Danny Murphy. He scored on a single by
JD Madrigal to give the guests the 1-0 lead.
Holy Names tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Neko Capsallaris had a one-out double and scored on a single by Domenik Cervantes to tie the game at 1-1. The Hawks took the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Dylan Leek had a one-out single advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Jamie Garcia drove in Leek with a single through the right side as Holy Names took the 2-1 lead.
The score remained 2-1 hosts until the Warrior half of the seventh inning.
Alex Solis had a lead-off double.
Mac Cabero walked to place runners on first and second with no outs. With one out, Solis scored the tying run (2-2) on a single by
Robert Valdivia.
In the bottom of the seventh, Alex Bueno had a lead-off walk and was pinch ran for by Jordan Lew-Gibbons. Lew-Gibbons went to second when Jake Guzman was hit by a pitch. With one out, Esai Santos reached on a fielder's choice which Lew-Gibbons was thrown out at third. Guzman scored on a two-out single to left field by Garcia as the Hawks took the night cap 3-2.
HITTING STARS: JD Madrigal had two of the Warriors' five hits. Madrigal and
Robert Valdivia each drove in both of Stan State's two runs.
Kyle Rachels and
Alex Solis scored the Warriors' two runs.
PITCHERS OF RECORD: Anthony Ramirez suffered the loss in relief, pitching 1.2 innings, giving one hit, one run while striking out one and walking two.
Kody Cardoza started the game for Stan State. He pitched four innings of six-hit ball, giving up two runs and striking out five.
Caleb Bertoncini pitched a scoreless inning of relief, walking one and striking out one.
UP NEXT: Stan State will return home to the friendly confines of Warrior Baseball Field on Tuesday, February 14 when the Warriors host Menlo College at 5pm. This will be the beginning of a nine-game home stand. After Menlo, Stan State will host Central Washington in back-to-back 1pm starting doubleheaders on February 17 and 18. The series will conclude with a CCAA four-game series with No. 29 Cal State Monterey Bay beginning at 6pm on Friday, February 24.
