Warriors Start Weekend Series with Central Washington with DH Split

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State began its weekend four-game series with Central Washington Wildcats dropping game one 6-0, but came back to the night cap 8-4.  The Warriors had ten hits with three players each with three hits in Kyle Rachels, Tyler Van Dyk and Ryan Leonesio.  In the night cap, Rachels had two hits and scored three times including on a solo home run to key the Warrior hitting attack in the night cap

GAME ONE:  The series opener was scoreless until the top of the third inning. Sam Lauderdale's lead-off solo home run gave Central Washington (3-8) the 1-0 lead.  The visitors increased their lead to 3-0 with a two-run fourth inning.  Lauderdale's two-run single in the eighth gave CWU a 5-0 lead.  The Wildcats added an insurance run on a Travis Helm double in the ninth as they took the opener 6-0.

WARRIOR LEADERS:  Stan State had ten hits in the opener with Kyle Rachels, Ryan Leonesio and Tyler Van Dyk each with two hits apiece to lead the way.  One of Van Dyk's two hits was his first double of the season. 

PITCHERS: Maxwell Pappas recorded the loss in the start, giving up five hits and three runs while striking out three and walking two.  Patrick Sweeney pitched a scoreless seventh in facing the minimum three batters.

GAME TWO: Kyle Rachels began the night cap for the Warriors with a lead-off double in the bottom of the first inning.  He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Robert Valdivia and scored on a ground out by Flavio Perez

Stan State (5-3) took a 3-0 lead with a two-run fourth inning.  Alex Solis had a lead-off single, went to second when Tyler Van Dyk walked.  They each advanced a base on a sacrifice by Luke Davies.  Solis scored on a sacrifice fly by Alexander Cummings.  Van Dyk scored on a two-out single by Jacob Baker

The Wildcats tied the game at 3-3 with a three-run fifth. The hosts retook the lead on a lead-off solo home run by Rachels in the bottom of fifth, 4-3.  They added another run in the sixth as they scored a run on hits and took advantage of walks by the Wildcat pitching staff.  CWU cut the deficit to 5-4 with a run in the top of the seventh inning. 

The hosts increased their lead to 7-4 with a two-run seventh inning.  The big was Van Dyk's run scoring single which scored Valdivia.  Stan State added an insurance run int eh eighth on a Perez run scoring single which scored Rachels with the Warriors' eighth run of the game as they took the 8-4 night cap.

WARRIOR LEADERS:  Stan State scored eight runs on just eight hits.  Kyle Rachels and Alex Solis each had two hits with Flavio Perez driving in two runs.  Rachels scored three runs and the duo of Solis and Tyler Van Dyk each scored two runs.  Rachels hit his second home run of the season and Jacob Baker stole his fourth and fifth base of the season.

PITCHERS.  LaKeal Morris (1-0) recorded the victory in relief, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings and striking out one.  Caleb BertonciniAustin Balentine and Anthony Ramirez combined to pitch the final three innings, giving up one hit and one unearned run while striking out two.  Casey Carr recorded the no-decision, pitching 4.2 innings, giving up six hits and three runs while striking out six and walking one.
