SAN MARCOS, Calif.---Stan State led No. 15 Cal State San Marcos 39-26 at the half, but the Cougars outscored the Warriors 32-18 in the third quarter to key their 82-71 CCAA victory at The Sports Center in San Marcos.
Makayla Rose paced Stan State with 29 points on 11-for-23 shooting from the field while recording four steals and grabbing five rebounds.
Joia Armstrong added a season high 19 points and Lilian Marques chipped in 10 points for the Warriors.
FIRST QUARTER: The 15
th ranked Cougars jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game. An
Aunika Hornung lay-up off a pass from
Alexis Woodson capped a 10-5 run by the Warriors as they tied the game at 10-10 with just three minutes left in the quarter. Stan State (6-18, 2-16 CCAA) finished the quarter outscoring its hosts 9-5 to take a 19-15 lead into the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER: The Warriors started the second quarter how they ended the first with a 9-3 run to take a 28-18 lead on a steal by
Makayla Rose and a lay-up by the freshman guard. A Jordan Vasquez lay-up cut the Warrior lead to 31-23 with 2:49 left in the half. Stan State came right back with an 8-1 run to take a 39-24 lead capped by a three by
Joia Armstrong off a pass from
Ashley Lewis. A Vasquez jumper for CSUSM cut Stan State's lead to 39-26 heading into the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER: Cal State San Marcos (19-3, 16-2 CCAA) started the third quarter with an 11-0 run to cut the Stan State lead to 39-37.
Makayla Rose's three free throws with 6:41 left in the quarter increased the Warriors' lead to 44-38. The Cougars finished the quarter outscoring Stan State 20-13 to take a 58-57 lead heading into the final ten minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER: Joia Armstrong's jumper on the Warriors' first possession gave the guests back the lead, 59-58. The hosts went on a 12-2 run to take a 70-61 lead capped by a Kelsey Forrester with a little under five minutes left in the game. A
Makayla Rose lay-up cut the Cougar lead to 75-69 with 1:42 left on the clock. The Cougars finished the game going five-for-six to take the 82-71 victory.
SEASON HIGH: Joia Armstrong had a season high 19 points for the Warriors in 38 minutes. She went eight-for-16 from the field, connected on a trey and going two-for-two from the line. She also had two assists and a steal.
ONCE AGAIN: Makayla Rose recorded her 12
th game of scoring 20 points or more this afternoon with her game high 29 points. She went 11-for-23 from the field and six-for-six from the line while making a trey. Rose had four steals and five rebounds to go with her one assist in 37 minutes.
ALSO IN DOUBLE DIGITS: Liliana Marques scored 10 points this afternoon for Stan State while going two-for-two from beyond the arc. She added six rebounds and two steals.
DEFENSE: Stan State forced 17 turnovers by the Cougars including 11 off of steals.
Makayla Rose had four to lead the Warriors.
Liliana Marques and
Ashmeen Sran each had two.
Joia Armstrong,
Alexis Woodson and
Aunika Hornung all had one steal.
FINAL HOME STAND: The Warriors will return home for the final time this regular season for a pair of games February 16 and 18. Stan State will host CSU Monterey Bay on Thursday, February 16 with a 5:30pm scheduled tip-off. This will be the Warriors' Homecoming Game. The Warriors will host San Francisco State on February 18 at 1pm.
