POMONA, Calif.--- For the first in program history, Stan State swept the season series from the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos this evening with a 70-67 victory at Kellogg Arena in Pomona, Calif.
Micah Boone paced the Warriors with a season high 18 points and six rebounds.
Marlon Short recorded his 17
th straight game of scoring in double digits with 13 points off the bench. Stan State had 18 assists on 27 made baskets including eight by
Benno Zecic.
FIRST HALF: Marlon Short's old-fashioned three-point play capped a game beginning 19-2 run by the Warriors in the first five and half minutes. Cal Poly Pomona (12-13, 9-12 CCAA) outscored the Warriors 14-6 in the next nine minutes to cut the Stan State lead to 25-16 on a three by Shyheim Parm.
Micah Boone's lay-up off a pass from
Kobe Ordonio capped a 6-1 run by the visitors as they increased their lead to 31-17 with four minutes left in the half. Another three by Parm cut the Bronco deficit to 31-22 with three minutes on the clock. Stan State finished the half outscoring the Broncos 7-4 to take a 38-26 lead into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: Travion Williams' lay-up off a pass from
Micah Boone in the first minute of the half gave the Warriors a 40-26 lead. The Broncos didn't go away as three times in the next ten minutes they cut the Warrior lead to five including 52-47 on a lay-up by Jordan Carpenter with nine minutes left in regulation. A
Marlon Short lay-up off a pass from
Kobe Ordonio increased Stan State's lead to double digits (60-50) with a little over five minutes to go in the game. The Broncos went on an 8-2 run capped by a Caleb Nelson layup to cut the Warrior lead to 62-58. On the Warriors' next possession, Short scored on a lay-up in the pain off a pass from
Benno Zecic to give Stan State a 64-58 lead. Shyheim Parm's three cut the visitors' lead to just one possession (64-61) with 99 seconds left on the clock. Stan State (10-17, 8-13 CCAA) went six-for-six from the line with Short going four-for-four and Ordonio two-for-two as the Warriors took the 70-67 road win.
CAREER NIGHT: Micah Boone scored a career high 18 points and grabbed a career high six rebounds to lead the way for the Warriors. He went seven-for-12 from the field including connecting on two of his four attempts from beyond the arc. Boone was two-for-three from the charity stripe to go with his one assist and one blocked shot in 34 minutes.
17TH STRAIGHT GAME: Marlon Short recorded his 17
th straight game of scoring in double digits this evening with 13 points off the bench. Short went four-for-nine from the field and five-for-six from the line for his 13 points. He also had four assists and three rebounds. For his career, Short has scored 628 points and grabbed 300 rebounds.
JUST NINE AWAY: With his eight assists this evening,
Benno Zecic is nine assists from breaking Richard Seay's single season record of 183 assists. Heading into the regular season finale, Zecic has 175 assists this season. He is three assists from moving into third place on the career list at Stan State as he has 317. Zecic is in fourth place on the single season steals list with 62 and is seven from moving into third place past Mel Claxton. For his career, the red-shirt junior has scored 434 points, dished out 317 assists, recorded 120 steals and grabbed 269 rebounds.
FIRST TIME: With tonight's 70-67 win, Stan State swept the season series from Cal Poly Pomona. Earlier this season, the Warriors defeated the Broncos 70-62 in Turlock.
REGULAR SEASON FINALE: Stan State will end its regular season at No. 11 Cal State San Bernardino for a 3pm match-up with the Yotes on at The Den on Saturday, February 25. The Yotes defeated Chico State 99-78 this evening in San Bernardino.
