Otters Take First Two of this Weekend’s Four-Game CCAA Series with Stan State

TURLOCK, Calif.---  The No. 29 Cal State Monterey Bay Otters took the first two games of this weekend's four-game series with Stan State 8-0 and 15-6 in a twi-light doubleheader at Warrior Field on the campus of Stan State.  Robert Valdivia went four-for-six with two runs batted in and a run scored in the doubleheader for the Warriors. 

GAME ONE:  The series opener was a pitching duel between the two teams' starters in Ryan Platero (1-0) and Maxwell Pappas.  The game was scoreless until the Otter fifth inning.  Dominic Felice led off the inning and reached on a Warrior throwing error. He later scored on a one-out single by Brady Miguel to give the Otters a 1-0 lead.  Cal State Monterey Bay (4-5, 2-0 CCAA) scored three runs in the sixth keyed by a Miguel two-run double to take a 4-0 lead.

The Otters increased their lead to 8-0 with a four run seventh inning.  Miguel's two-run single was the big hit in the seventh as the visitors took the opener 8-0.

WARRIOR HITTERS:  Robert Valdivia had two of the Warriors' five hits.  One of his five hits was a double.  He also stole a base along with Jacob Baker.

STAN STATE PITCHERS:  Maxwell Pappas (1-2) suffered the loss in the start for the Warriors.  He went 5.1 innings, giving up five hits, four runs, three earned, while striking out four and walking four.  Three Warrior relievers in Patrick Sweeney, Damian Vallejos and Bobby Garcia combined to pitch 3.1 innings of scoreless innings, giving up three hits, striking out two and walking one.

GAME TWO:  Just like the opener, the night cap was a pitching duel between the Otters' Ryan Sleeman (1-0) and Stan State's Casey Carr.  Cal State Monterey Bay took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.  Kyle Barileau reached on a Warrior error and later scored on a two-out single by Trent Free.  The visitors took a 3-0 lead with a two-run fifth with the first coming on a lead-off solo home run by Nico Hartojo.  CSUMB broke the game open with a nine-run sixth inning to take a 12-0 lead.

Stan State (7-5, 0-2 CCAA) cut the Otter lead in half with a six-run eighth inning.  Jonluke Goldman had a one-hit pitch-hit double.  He went to third on a two-out single by Alexander CummingsJacob Baker walked to load the bases.  Alex Solis pitch hit for Ryan Leonesio and walked to bring in Goldman with the Warriors' first run of the game.  Still with two outs, Kyle Rachels and Robert Valdivia had back-to-back two-run doubles to cut the deficit to 12-5.  JD Madrigal brought home Valdivia with the sixth run of the innings to make it 12-6 CSUMB.

The Otters had three insurance runs in the ninth to increase their lead to 15-6.  They shut down the Warriors in the bottom of the ninth to take a 15-6 night cap victory.

WARRIOR HITTERS:  Kyle Rachels went three-for-five with two runs batted in and a run scored.  Robert Valdivia had two hits and drove in two runs and soring a run.  Alexander Cummings also had tow hits and a run scored.

STAN STATE PITCHERS;  Casey Carr (2-1) suffered his first loss  of the season, giving up seven hits, three runs (two earned), while striking out four.  Noah Chelberg pitched two scoreless innings of relief giving up a hit and striking out three.

UP NEXT: The two teams will finish out the weekend series with a 11am starting doubleheader on Sunday, February 26.
