Warriors Finish the Seawolves Series Falling 2-0

NOVATO, Calif. – The Warriors fight hard in the abbreviated series against Sonoma State, but are unable to avoid the 3-0 sweep in their road series. Payton Applequist, Kaylee Heath, Lauryn Serda, and Emily Bigley were Stan State's scorers over 14 innings at Novato HS.

SCORING SUMMARY: Early scoring for the Warriors soon fizzled out after the 4th inning, following runs by Heath and Applequist. Heath scored on a Thornsberry RBI that brought Stan State to within a run at 2-1. Thornsberry once again sparked the team's second run of the game to tie things up 2-2. Her bunt brought Applequist home on an unearned run on an error by the catcher.

GAME ONE: Stan State's final run in the 4th inning tied the game for just a short amount of time. The following inning saw two scores off an RBI single from the Seawolves. Sonoma State followed things up with two RBIs off a single to go up 6-2. Unable to answer back in the final two innings, the Warriors ended game two with a loss.

PITCHING SOLO: Jessell Lewis pitched all six innings for the Warriors, but had trouble stringing solid innings together to keep batters at bay. Regardless, she ended her day with seven groundouts and eight force-outs on 29 batters faced.

1 to 3 CONNECTION: Lewis' five assists and Applequist's six putouts were the team's leaders, as they saw plenty of balls bounce their way in the game with just one error coming from the mound.

GAME TWO: Stan State came out the gates swinging in the first inning, scoring the opening run of the game to go up 1-0. The Seawolves managed to answer with back-to-back two run innings that ultimately put them over the edge. Despite the Warriors outhitting Sonoma State 10-7, the Seawolves' two-run homer made all the difference in the 4-2 victory.

SCORING SUMMARY: Applequist helped earn the Warriors' first run of the game on an RBI single that ended in an Emily Bigley score. Stanislaus State cooled off until a Mikaela Ferreira double to right center field got Lauryn Serda to home plate in the fifth inning.

MOSTLY MARZORINI: Kyndra Marzorini took the mound for all six of the Warriors innings, collecting five strikeouts on the day. Marzorini didn't walk a single batter on the Seawolves side and had six force-outs and seven groundouts on the day.

THROWING IN THREES: The trio of C Karli DalBianco, 1B Applequist, and 2B Sheridan Gulley combined for 14 of the team's 18 putouts in the game. They also had three of the team's seven assists.

UP NEXT: Following their bye week, the Warriors return home to play Cal State San Bernardino on Mar. 10th and 11th at Warrior Softball Stadium.
