CARSON, Calif.--- Stan State snapped CCAA leader Cal State Dominguez Hills (10-6, 5-1 CCAA) at five with a 10-3 series opener victory. The Warriors took a 5-0 lead after the first three and a half innings and never looked back in their 10-3 victory.
Kyle Rachels,
Flavio Perez and
Ryan Leonesio went a combined nine-for-13 with three runs batted in and six runs scored for the Warrior hitters.
Maxwell Pappas (2-2) picked up the win in the start for Stan State, pitching seven innings, giving up eight hits and three runs while striking out six and walking two.
Stan State (12-11, 5-8 CCAA) took 1-0 in its half of the first inning.
Kyle Rachels began the game reaching on a Toro error. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Robert Valdivia and to third on a fly out to right field by
Tyler Van Dyk. Rachels scored the game's first run on a two-out double by
Flavio Perez.
The Warriors increased their lead to 3-0 with a two-run third.
Ryan Leonesio and Rachels began the inning with back-to-back singles. They advanced a base on another sacrifice bunt by Valdivia. Leonesio scored on a passed ball. Rachels scored on a single through the left side by Perez. The Warriors added two more in the fourth. Leonesio walked with two outs and went to second on an infield single by Rachel. They each advanced a base on a stolen base. Valdivia hit the third pitch he saw for a two-out two-run single which increased Stan State's lead to 5-0.
The Toros cut the Warrior lead to 5-1 with a run in the fourth inning. Stan State increased its lead to 10-1 with a five-run fifth inning. Perez had a lead-off double and went to third on a bunt single by
Alex Solis.
Danny Murphy was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Mac Cabero drove in Perez and Solis with a two-run double down the left field line. Murphy scored on a run scoring single by
Jacob Baker. Cabero scored on a single by Leonesio. With two outs, Baker scored on a single by Van Dyk to give the Warriors a 10-1 lead.
CSUDH scored two runs in its half of the eighth inning which was started by a lead-off solo home run by Aaron Greenfield. Stan State held on for the 10-3 conference victory.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Stan State had 14 hits on the day with the trio of
Kyle Rachels,
Flavio Perez and
Ryan Leonesio each with three. Rachels went three-for-five with three runs scored, Perez went three-for-five with two runs batted in and a run scored while Leonesio was three-for-three with a run batted in and two runs scored.
Mac Cabero and
Robert Valdivia each drove in two runs.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Maxwell Pappas (2-2) picked up his second win of the season. He pitched seven innings, giving up eight hits and three runs while striking out six and walking two.
Patrick Sweeney and
Austin Balentine combined to pitch two scoreless innings of relief, walking two and striking out two.
UP NEXT: The Warriors and CSUDH will continue their weekend four-game series on Saturday, March 18 with a noon starting doubleheader. The series will conclude this Sunday, March 19 with a noon starting single nine-inning game.
