CARSON, Calif.--- Stan State pounded out 12 hits including hitting four home runs, two by
Flavio Perez, to its 8-5 extra-inning victory over the hosts, Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros. Perez was three-for-six with four runs batted in, two runs scored and two home runs to lead the Warrior hitting attack.
Anthony Ramirez (1-1) pitched three scoreless innings of relief, striking out three and walking two. The night cap was suspended due to the darkness tied at 3-3 heading into the tenth inning. Game three will be made up beginning at noon with the series finale to begin immediately after the conclusion of the third game.
GAME ONE: The Toros took advantage of a Warrior error to take the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Cal State Dominguez Hills (10-7, 5-2 CCAA) took advantage of back-to-back one-out walks and took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
The Warriors took a 3-2 lead with a three-run third inning.
Tyler Van Dyk reached on a two-out error. He scored on
Flavio Perez's two-run home run to left center field.
Alex Solis doubled and then
Danny Murphy walked. Still with two outs,
Mac Cabero drove home Solis with the go-ahead run with an infield single.
Cal State Dominguez Hills tied the game in its half of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Emilio Barrera, 3-3. The Toros took a 4-3 lead with a run in the sixth inning. Andrew Buglino had a lead-off walk and went to second on a failed pickoff attempt. He later scored on a sacrifice fly by Eric Smelko.
Van Dyk's solo home run with two outs in the Warrior seventh tied the game at 4-4 for Stan State. The Toros retook the lead in their half of the seventh. Anthony Accordino had a one-out single and advanced to second on a two-out single by Miguel Marin. Justin Abercrombie pinch ran for Accordino and scored on a two-out single by Matt Mecate to give the hosts a 5-4 lead.
Stan State (13-11, 6-8 CCAA) tied the game in its half of the eighth inning. Murphy reached base on a one-out error. He went to second on a single by Cabero.
Luke Davies pinch ran for Murphy.
Jacob Baker walked to load the bases. With one out,
Jonluke Goldman drove home Davies with the tying run on a ground out, 5-5.
The game remained tied until the Warrior eleventh.
Kyle Rachels had a solo home run, his third of the season, to give the visitors the 6-5 lead.
Robert Valdivia walked and scored on a two-out home run by Perez to increase the Warriors' lead to 8-5.
The Toros threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the eleventh. Abercombie had a lead-off single and went to third on a one-out single by Marin. Pinch hitter Brock Denbo walked to load the bases with one out. Stan State reliever
Anthony Ramirez induced the next Toro to strike out and the final out on a line out back to him to preserve the 8-6 extra-winning Warrior victory.
WARRIOR HITTERS: The Warriors had twelve hits in the second game of the four-game weekend series.
Flavio Perez went three-for-six with four runs batted in and two runs scored for Stan State. He hit two home runs both two run shots for his second and third of the season.
Tyler Van Dyk was two-for-five with a run batted in and two runs scored. Van Dyk hit his team leading fourth home run of the season.
Mac Cabero went three-for-five with a run batted in for the Warriors.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Anthony Ramirez (1-1) picked up the victory in relief. He pitched three innings of scoreless relief, giving up three hits, striking out three and walking two.
Austin Balentine continued his strong sophomore season. He pitched 1.1 innings, giving up two hits and striking out two.
Casey Carr recorded the no-decision in the start, pitching 4.2 innings, giving up just two hits and three runs (one earned) while walking five and striking out three.
Caleb Bertoncini pitched two innings of relief, giving up four this and two runs (one earned), striking out two and walking one.
SUSPENDED GAME: In the night cap, Stan State took a 2-0 lead on a two-out two-run double by
Alex Solis which scored
Flavio Perez and
Tyler Van Dyk. The Toros tied the game at 2-2 on a two-run home run by Justin Abercrombie in the Toro second. They took a 3-12lead on a solo home run by Vincent Temesevary in the bottom of the third inning.
Stan State tied the game at 3-3 in their its half of the fifth.
Ryan Leonesio had a lead-off double and was out when
Kyle Rachels reached on a fielder's choice.
Robert Valdivia was hit by a pitch to place runners at first and second with one out. Rachels scored on a Van Dyk double down the left field line to tie the game at 3-3.
The game remained tied and went into extra-innings until it was suspended because of darkness. The two teams will finish off the game tomorrow beginning at noon. Stan State will begin the tenth with
Flavio Perez leading off the tenth and Chris Cornelius on the mound for CSUDH. The series finale will begin at the conclusion of the suspended game.
Stan State has ten hits in the game with three Warriors each with two hits apiece in Valdivia, Van Dyk and Leonesio.
Tony Jacob started the game and pitched eight innings, giving up seven hits and three runs while striking out seven and walking two.
Alex Kendrick pitched 0.2 scoreless innings of relief, giving up no hits, walking one and striking out one.
Patrick Sweeney is currently on the mound for the Warriors as he has pitched 0.1 innings of relief.
