TURLOCK, Calif. – Back in Turlock for a long-term homestand, the Warriors clashed against the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay in the opening doubleheader of their four-game series. The final score was decided by 2-1 leads from the visitors following runs scored in the first four innings of action.
GAME ONE: Cal State Monterey Bay drew first blood in the series with a 2
nd inning RBI up the middle to take the 1-0 lead. The Warriors managed to answer back in the 3
rd, but the Otters responded in their next at bat to seal the deal on the series opener win.
SCORING SUMMARY: Following the Otters first run of the day, Stan State found themselves in the scoring column after a
Katie Thornsberry single up the middle that hopped its way to the outfield to leave room for a Warriors run. Unfortunate errors snuffed the home team's scoring, after an Otters double to right center field brought an RBI along with it.
A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS: On paper, the teams' final stat lines were quite similar, as both finished with a total of five hits, leaving four runners on base. An identical 21 putouts kept the teams right on pace with each other as well.
LAPSES IN CONCENTRATION: Throwing errors plagued the Warriors defensive efforts, as three slip-ups throughout the game allowed runners on base throughout the contest. Nonetheless, the Otters had two errors of their own to deal with, while the Warriors still managed to match Monterey Bay's total putouts for the game.
GAME TWO: Early scoring once again decided the final fate of these two teams in their Friday afternoon rematch, as the Otters got ahead to a two-run lead to start the contest. The Warriors made the most of fielding errors from Monterey Bay, but couldn't manage to even the score down the stretch.
SCORING SUMMARY: RBI singles in the 2
nd and 3
rd inning got the Otters off to a modest start with the lead in-hand. Following a fielding error that led to a
Mikaela Ferreira RBI, she would reach third base while setting up a Thornsberry unearned run in the bottom of the 4
th.
FIELDSWEEPERS: Stan State cleaned the streets on defense, making quick work of their innings in the field with another 21-putout display paired with 12 efficient assists.
