Stan State Takes Series Finale 10-7 to Split Weekend Series with the Golden Eagles

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State Warriors defeated Cal State Los Angeles this afternoon 10-7 in the series finale of this weekend's CCAA series between the two teams in Turlock.  Damian Vallejos (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Warriors and Anthony Ramirez recorded his fourth save of the season.  The Warriors pounded out a season high 15 hits on the afternoon with Tyler Van Dyk leading the way going three-for-five and driving in three runs.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead to begin the game in the top of the first inning.  Johnny Pacheco had a lead-off double and later scored on a ground out by Andrew Tovar.  The Warriors tied the game at 1-1 in their half of the first. Kyle Rachels had a lead-off single went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Robert Valdivia.  He scored on a one-out single by Tyler Van Dyk

Stan State (16-15, 9-11 CCAA) took a 3-1 lead with a two-run second inning.  With two outs, Jacob Baker singled up the middle and scored on a double by Ryan Leonesio.  Rachels doubled home Leonesio to give the Warriors a 3-1 lead.

Cal State Los Angeles (10-12, 5-8 CCAA) cut the Warrior lead in half with a run in the top of the third inning.  Nick Atkins reached base when he was hit by a pitch with two outs.  He went to third on a double by Matthew Piotrowski and scored on an infield single by Tovar.

The Warriors broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning.  Flavio Perez had a lead-off single and went to third on a double by Alex SolisJonluke Goldman singled home Perez to increase the Warriors' lead to 4-2.  Solis scored on a single by Mac Cabero.  Still with no outs, Jacob Baker was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Goldman scored when Leonesio drew a bases loaded walk.  Cabero scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Rachels.  With two outs, Van Dyk gave the Warriors a 10-2 lead on a two-run single to bring in Baker and Leonesio.

The Golden Eagles scored a run in their half of the sixth to cut the Stan State lead to 10-3. They added two more runs in the seventh to decrease the Warrior lead to 10-5.  The visitors made it interesting in the top of the ninth.  Piotrowski was hit by a pitch with one out.  He went to second when Tovar walked.  Michael Rosales singled to load the bases. 

With one out, Fabian Moran drew a bases loaded walk to cut the Golden Eagle deficit to 10-6.  Wilem Drozdowski drove home Tovar with a sacrifice fly to Solis in right field to make
it Stan State 10-7.  With two outs, Anthony Ramirez came in to pitch for the Warriors and struck out the last Cal State Los Angeles batter and preserved the 10-7 Warrior series finale victory.

STAN STATE BATTERS:  The Warriors had a season high of 15 hits on the day.  Tyler Van Dyk paced the Warriors with his three-for-five day while driving in three runs.  Kyle Rachels, Flavio Perez and Alex Solis went a combined six-for-fourteen two runs batted in and scoring three runs.  Ryan Leonesio had a hit, drove in two runs and scored two runs.  Jacob Baker scored three runs for the Warriors.

WARRIOR PITCHERS:  Damian Vallejos (1-0) picked up the win in relief, pitching three innings, giving up two hits and a run while striking out one.  Will Crookham recorded the no-decision in the start, pitching three innings, giving up three hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out three.   Anthony Ramirez recorded his fourth save of the season by pitching a scoreless 0.1 innings and striking out one.

SIXTH PLACE.  Going 2-2 this weekend, Stan State is now in sixth place in the CCAA heading into its four-game series at Cal State San Marcos.  The top six teams at the end of the regular season will receive a berth to the CCAA Baseball Championships, May 10-13, at Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside, Calif.  The five teams in the CCAA heading into this week are Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State San Bernardino, Chico State, Cal State Dominguez Hills, and Cal Poly Pomona. 

UP NEXT:  Stan State will be back on the road this weekend, March 31-April 2, in San Marcos, Calif., for a four-game series with Cal State San Marcos.  After playing the Cougars, the Warriors will travel to Stockton, Calif., for a exhibition game with the Stockton Ports on Tuesday, April 4 at 6:30pm.
