SAN MARCOS, Calif.--- Stan State Warriors split their road series opening doubleheader with Cal State San Marcos taking the opener 4-3 and losing the nightcap 2-0 in San Marcos.
Tony Jacob picked up his second win in the opener and
Anthony Ramirez recorded his fifth save of the season. The Cougars took the nightcap 2-0 behind the pitching duo of Pat MacDonald and Preston Kelly.
GAME ONE: The series opener was a pitching duel into the fifth inning when
Robert Valdivia hit a two-out home run over the left field fence to give Stan State an 1-0 lead. This was Valdivia's second home run of the season.
Cal State San Marcos took a 2-1 lead with a two-run sixth inning capped by an Anthony Pacino sacrifice fly. Stan State (17-15, 10-12 CCAA) retook the lead with a three-run eighth to take a 4-2 lead.
Flavio Perez had a one-out double followed by
Alex Solis who reached on a Cougar error.
Jonluke Goldman drove in Perez with a run scoring single to tie the game at 2-2. With two outs,
Jacob Baker singled home Solis and Goldman scored on an errant Cougar throw as the Warriors took the 4-2 lead.
The Cougars cut the Warrior lead in half with a run in the eighth inning, 4-3.
Anthony Ramirez came in the ninth for the guests and retired the Cougars in order to preserve the 4-3 Warrior victory.
STAN STATE HITTERS: The Warriors had ten hits in game one of this weekend's three-game series.
Jonluke Goldman went two-for-three with a run batted in and a run scored.
Flavio Perez was two-for-five with a run scored. Seven other Warriors had a hit apiece in
Kyle Rachels,
Robert Valdivia (home run),
Tyler Van Dyk,
Mac Cabero and
Jacob Baker.
WARRIOR PITCHERS: Tony Jacob (2-1) picked up the win in the start. Jacob pitched seven innings, giving up three hits and two runs while striking out six and walking five.
Caleb Bertoncini and
Anthony Ramirez combined to pitch two innings of relief, giving up one run and walking four. Ramirez recorded his fifth save of the season.
GAME TWO: Just like today's opener, the nightcap was a pitchers' duel between Stan State's
Casey Carr and the Cougars' Pat MacDonald Jr. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning. Nick Schnopp drew a two-out walk and stole second. He scored on a run scoring single by Anthony Pacino to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Cal State San Marcos (10-12, 4-8 CCAA) doubled its lead in the bottom of the sixth. Luke Reece had a lead-off single. He went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ethan Rivera and scored on a Schnopp double to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
Stan State had a chance to tie the game in its last at bat in the top of the seventh.
Alex Solis had a lead-off walk and went to second when
Mac Cabero was hit by a pitch.
JD Madrigal reached base on a Cougar error off a sacrifice bunt to load the bases with no one out. Preston Kelly struck out the next two Warrior batters. He induced the last Stan State batter to fly out to center field as the Cougars took the nightcap 2-0.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Tyler Van Dyk had Stan State's only hit in the game.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Casey Carr (3-3) suffered the loss for the Warriors in start. He pitched 5.1 innings, giving up four this and two runs while striking out four and walking three.
Patrick Sweeney pitched 0.2 scoreless innings of relief, walking one and striking out one.
SERIES FINALE: The two teams will conclude the three-game series tomorrow morning with an 11am scheduled nine-inning game. After tomorrow's game, Stan State will travel to Stockton for an exhibition game with the Stockton Ports at Banner Island Ballpark with a scheduled first pitch of 6:30pm.
