Stan State Splits Four-Game Series with Wildcats

CHICO, Calif.--- After taking the first two games of the four-game series on Friday, the Stan State Warriors were swept by Chico State 7-1 and 6-4 this afternoon in Chico as the two teams split the four-game series.  In the night cap, two of Stan State's four runs came off of solo home runs by Robert Valdivia and Tyler Van DykAlexander Cummings had two of the Warriors' seven hits and scored one of their four runs. 

GAME ONE:  The Wildcats took game one 7-1 after Stan State took the first two games on Friday 5-4 and 11-5.  The Warriors scored their run in the top of the first inning. With two outs, JD Madrigal reached on an error.  He went to third on a Flavio Perez double.  Madrigal scored when Tyler Van Dyk reached on a wild pitch which Madrigal scored the game's first run.

GAME ONE:  Chico State took the lead in its half of the first with a five-run inning. Kyle Dobson's two-run double keyed the five-run inning for Chico.  The Wildcats added two more insurance runs in the second inning as the hosts held on for the 7-1 victory.

WARRIOR HITTING STARS:  Flavio Perez had two of the Warriors' six hits with one of them being a double.  Kyle Rachels, Robert Valdivia, Danny Murphy and Alex Solis each had an hit apiece. 

STAN STATE PITCHERS:  Kyle Cardoza (1-2) suffered the loss in the start for the Warriors.  Will Crookham, Damien Vallejos and LaKeal Morris combined to pitch 6.2 scoreless innings of relief, giving up three hits, striking out six and walking two.

GAME TWO:  Stan State (10-8, 3-5 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead on a one-out solo home run by Robert Valdivia in the top of the first inning of the night cap.  The Wildcats tied the game at 1-1 on a two-out run scoring double by Jacob Jablonski. 

Kyle Van Dyke's lead-off solo home run, his second of the season, gave the Warriors back the lead, 2-1, in the top of the fourth inning.  The Warriors doubled their lead with a run in the seventh, 3-1.  Alexander Cummings had a one-out single.  He went to third on a double by Jacob Baker and scored on an error by the Wildcats.

Chico State (7-6, 2-2 CCAA) scored five runs in its half of the seventh inning to take a 6-3 lead. Xabi Iparraguirre two-run double capped the five-run seventh for the hosts. The Warriors cut the deficit to 6-4 in the eighth.  Flavio Perez had a one-out double and scored on a two-out single by Alex Solis

The Wildcats shut down the Warriors in the ninth to take the 6-4 come-from-behind victory and to split the weekend series.

WARRIOR HITTING STARS:  Alexander Cummings had two of the Warriors' seven hits and scored a run.  Robert Valdivia hit his first home run of the season while Tyler Van Dyk had his second home run of the season.  Flavio Perez and Jacob Baker each had a double.

STAN STATE PITCHERS:  Tony Jacob recorded the no-decision, pitching four innings, giving up four hits and a run in the start.  Austin Balentine (1-1) suffered the loss in relief.  The trio of Caleb Bertoncini, Noah Chelberg and Anthony Ramirez pitched a combined two innings, giving up one hit and a run while striking out one and walking three.

BACK HOME:  Stan State returns home to March 10-12 to host Cal State San Bernardino in a four-game series.  The series will begin on Friday, March 10 for a 6pm single game against the Yotes.  It will continue with a 1pm starting doubleheader on Saturday, March 11.  The two teams will conclude the series with a noon starting single game on Sunday, March 12.
