TURLOCK, Calif.-- Stan State played its version of small ball this evening to key its 8-2 series opening victory over the visiting San Francisco State Gators.
Jacob Baker led the way going three-for-three with three runs scored, a run batted in, and two stolen bases.
Flavio Perez,
Mac Cabero,
Kyle Rachels, and
Robert Valdivia went a combined nine-for-17, scoring four runs and driving in three runs.
Tony Jacob (3-1) picked up the win in the start, pitching six innings, giving up three hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out five and walking three.
The Warriors, who snapped SF State's winning streak at three, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Flavio Perez had a two-out single and later scored on a
Kyle Rachels' single to right field. The Gators tied the game, 1-1, in their half of the second inning two-out double by Kyle Sugden.
Stan State (19-15, 12-12 CCAA) retook the lead in its half of the second.
Jacob Baker and
Ryan Leonesio each had lead-off bunt singles and advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by
Robert Valdivia. Baker scored on a
Tyler Van Dyk sacrifice fly. Once again, San Francisco State (21-13, 14-12 CCAA) tied the game in the next half-inning. This time, Daniel Santos' one-out double scored Sammy Gonzales to tie the game at 2-2.
The Warriors retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Baker had a lead-off single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Leonesio. With two outs, Baker stole third and score on a wild pitch to give the hosts a 3-2 lead.
The hosts doubled their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Mac Cabero had a lead-off single, went to second on a Baker sacrifice bunt. He scored on a two-out single by Valdivia to give Stan State a 4-2 lead. The Warriors broke the game opener with a four-run eighth inning to increase their lead to 8-2.
Noah Chelberg came in the ninth and pitched a scoreless ninth as the Warriors took the series opener 8-2.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Stan State was one hit from tying its season high in hits as the Warriors had fourteen this evening.

Noah Chelberg combined to hold the Gators to just three hits on the evening. Jacob (3-1) picked up the win in the start, pitching six innings, giving up three hits and two runs (one earned), while striking out five and walking three. Bertoncini pitched two scoreless innings, striking out three and walking one. Chelberg pitched a scoreless ninth while striking out two.
