Gators Hold on to Warriors' Series in Extra Innings
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – After two close games to open up the Warriors' road matchup with SF State, the Gators managed to pull off the Friday sweep with 2-1 and 3-2 wins on their home field.
GAME ONE: After a scoreless first five innings, both teams got their offenses going in with a 2-1 lead going to the Gators. SF State would follow up with another run scored in the 6th inning to go up 3-1, but with one final chance to even the score, the Warriors would only managed to earn a single run in the 7th inning before retiring the 3-2 final.
SCORING SUMMARY: Mikaela Ferreira got her squad fired up with a solo home run to spark the Warriors' scoring efforts. This was Ferreira's second home run of the season, as she is currently the team's only hitter to slap one out of the park. It was Madison Flexser's sacrifice fly in the 7th inning that got Stan State its second run of the day for Katie Thornsberry. But the team ran out of real estate in the final inning of play, unable to tie things up.
EVIL ERRORS: The Warriors' lone error in the game gave the Gators two unearned runs that set the team back in a major way. Despite the error, the team finished with 18 total putouts and 5 assists.
HEAVY HITS: Aside from the solo homer, Stan State outhit the Gators 10-3 in the game. Thornsberry also earned her first triple of the year in the final inning, eventually leading to a Stan State score.
GAME TWO: It was another close scoring matchup between the Gators and the Warriors in their second meeting of the series, stretching the game to 12 whole innings before a victor was decided in the 2-1 victory for SF State.
SCORING SUMMARY: The Warriors scored their only run in the 4
th inning after a double to left field from
Payton Applequist brought
Korie Corral around third base to tie the game up 1-1. It wasn't until the 12
th inning that an RBI double from the Gators sealed the deal on their two opening wins in the series.
MARATHON MATCHUP: With five extra innings to spare, both teams saw record putouts through 12 innings of action. The Warriors finished with a whopping 35 putouts on the day, but were limited to just 5 assists.
SEASONAL STRIKEOUTS: Victoria Alarcon pitched the full game for the Warriors, earning a season-high eight strikeouts in the process. The sophomore also has 21 forceouts and 5 groundouts during her time in the circle.
