POMONA, Calif.-- Behind the pitching of Caleb Reyes, Cal Poly Pomona took the series opener of this weekend's four-game CCAA series with the visiting Stan State Warriors, 6-1.
Tony Jacob suffered the loss in the start for the Warriors.
Cal Poly Pomona (24-14, 16-12 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead in its half of the second inning. Cedrick Perez had a one-out walk and scored on a Darius Price double to left field. The Broncos doubled their lead in the third inning on a two-out run scoring single by Marco Malerba.
Stan State (21-17, 14-14 CCAA) cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth.
Kyle Rachels and
Tyler Van Dyk had back-to-back lead off singles to put runners on the corners. Rachels scored when
Mac Cabero reached on a fielder's choice to cut the Bronco lead to 2-1.
The Broncos increased their lead to 5-1 with a three-run sixth inning. They added an insurance run in the eighth on a two-out Trent MacKinney double to left center to give the hosts a 6-1 lead.
With two outs,
JD Madrigal reached on an infield single in the Warrior top of the ninth but Bronco starter, Caleb Reyes (6-1), retired the next Stan State batter on a fly out to center field to preserve the 6-1 Cal Poly Pomona victory.
STAN STATE HITTERS: Six different Warrior batters had one hit apiece in

Kyle Rachels,
Tyler Van Dyk, and
JD Madrigal.
Mac Cabero had a run batted in and Rachels scored the Warriors' run.
WARRIOR PITCHERS: Tony Jacob (3-2) suffered the loss in the start for the Warriors.
Patrick Sweeney pitched 1.1 scoreless innings of relief while striking out two.
Kody Cardoza pitched the ninth inning, giving up two hits and a run while striking out one.
