Warriors Sweep Broncos Move into Tie for Fourth Place

POMONA, Calif.--  Stan State swept this afternoon's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader from the hosts, Cal Poly Pomona Broncos 4-2 and 6-1 behind the pitching of Casey Carr, Caleb Bertoncini, Will Crookham, and Damian Vallejos.  With the sweep, Stan State moves into a tie for fourth place with the Broncos and a half-game out of third place in the CCAA standings.
 
GAME ONE:  Cal Poly Pomona (24-16, 16-14 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead in today's opener in the bottom of the second inning.  Cedrick Perez drove in Marco Malerba with a double to left center.  The game remained 1-0 Broncos until the Warrior half of the sixth inning.
 
Jacob Baker and Ryan Leonesio were each hit by a pitch to lead off the Warrior sixth.  Robert Valdivia had a sacrifice bunt to advance each runner a base.  With one out, Baker scored on a bunt single by Alex Solis to tie the game at 1-1.  Flavio Perez drove in Leonesio with a sacrifice fly to center to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead.  Stan State took a 3-1 lead on a two-out double by Kyle Rachels which scored Solis.
 
Stan State added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning.  Solis had a one-out double and scored on a two-out single by Danny Murphy to give the Warriors a 4-1 lead. 
 
The Broncos made it interesting in their half of the ninth.  With two outs, Malerba doubled to center field and scored on a single by Perez to cut the Warrior lead to 4-2.  Stan State reliever, Caleb Bertoncini, induced the final Bronco batter to ground out to Perez at third to preserve the 4-2 Warrior victory.
 
WARRIOR HITTERS:  Alex Solis went two-for-four with a run batted in and scored two runs for the Warriors.  Five other Stan State batters had one hit apiece in Flavio Perez, Kyle Rachels, Tyler Van Dyk, Danny Murphy, and Mac Cabero
 
STAN STATE PITCHERS:  Casey Carr (5-3) picked up the win in the start for the Warriors.  He pitched six innings, giving up four this and a run while striking out two and walking no one.  Caleb Bertoncini recorded his first save of the season by pitching the final three innings.  Bertoncini gave up five hits and a run.
 
GAME TWO:  Stan State (22-17, 16-14 CCAA) took the 1-0 lead in its half of the second inning.  Rachels had a lead-off single and scored on a Mac Cabero one-out double down the left field line.  The Warriors increased their lead to 3-0 with a two-run third.  Leonesio walked to begin the inning.  He went to second on a one-out Solis' single to left field.  Solis and Leonesio stole second and third respectively.  Leonesio scored on an infield single by Rachels.  Solis scored when Rachels stole second and the Broncos overthrew second base on the throw to give the guests the 3-0 lead. 
 
The Warriors broke the game open with a three-run fourth inning.  Murphy and Baker began the inning each being hit by a pitch.  The bases were loaded when Leonesio reached on a bunt single.  Valdivia and Solis each drew a bases loaded walk and bring in Murphy and Baker.  With two outs and the bases still loaded, Tyler Van Dyk also drew a walk to score Leonesio and give Stan State a 6-0 lead.
 
The Broncos didn't have a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning.  With two outs, Trent MacKinney had a double to left field, but he was stranded their as Damian Vallejos induced the next Bronco batter to ground out back to him and end the Pomona fifth. 
Cal Poly Pomona got in the run column in its half of the seventh.  Ben Lee had a two-out double and scored when Luke Watson reached on an error to cut the Warrior lead to 6-1.  Vallejos induced the last Bronco batter to ground out to Perez at third as Stan State took the night cap 6-1.
 
WARRIOR HITTERS:  Kyle Rachels and Mac Cabero went a combined four-for-eight with two runs batted in and a run scored.  Ryan Leonesio went one-for-two scoring two runs and Alex Solis was one-for-three with a run batted in and a run scored. 
 
STAN STATE PITCHERS:  Will Crookham recorded the no-decision.  He pitched the first two innings, giving up no hits and walking two.  Damian Vallejos (3-1) picked up the win in relief.  He pitched the final five innings, giving up two hits and one unearned run while walking no one.

 UP NEXT:  The Warriors will conclude their four-game series at Cal Poly Pomona with a noon starting single game on Sunday, April 23. They will return home April 28-30 when the Warriors hosts Sonoma State in a four-game series. The series opener will be at 6pm on Friday, April 28 on Blue Chip Broadcasting Sponsorship Night.  The two teams will continue the series at noon on Saturday, April 29 on Golden Valley Health Center Day.  The series will conclude on Senior Day, April 30 at noon.  Prior to the game, Stan State will recognize its five seniors in Casey Carr, Bobby Garcia, Tony Jacob, Maxwell Pappas, and Anthony Ramirez.
