Stan State Takes Series Finale, 6-1, and Moves into a Tie for Third Place in the CCAA

POMONA, Calif.--  Stan State captured its second consecutive conference series this afternoon by defeating Cal Poly Pomona 6-1 this afternoon at Scolinos Field in Pomona, Calif.  With the win, the Warriors take the series 3-1 and move into a tie for third place with San Francisco State in the CCAA regular season standings with eight games remaining this season.

Stan State (24-17, 17-14 CCAA) scored four runs in its half of the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead.  Tyler Van Dyk and Mac Cabero had back-to-back one-out singles for the Warriors.  Danny Murphy was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.  Van Dyk scored on an infield single by Jacob Baker.  The Warriors doubled their lead when Ryan Leonesio reached on a fielder's choice on which brought in Cabero with the inning's second run.  Stan State increased its lead to 3-0 on a successful double steal attempt by Leonesio and Murphy.  Leonesio scored on a two-out single by Robert Valdivia to give the Warriors a 4-0 lead.

Warrior starting pitcher, Anthony Ramirez, didn't give up a run until the Bronco half of the fifth inning.  Luke Watson reached on a lead-off single and scored when Dante Palacios reached on a Warrior error to cut the Bronco deficit to 4-1.  Ramirez shut down the Broncos' scoring threat.  He induced the next Cal Poly Pomona (24-17, 16-15 CCAA) batter to ground out to Leonesio at second.  The next batter walked to place runners on first and third.  With one out, Ramirez induced the next batter to ground out back to him on the mound which Palacio was thrown out at home on.  The last Bronco batter grounded out to Valdivia at shortstop to end the Bronco scoring threat and preserve the 4-1 Stan State lead.

The Warriors added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-1 lead.  Baker had a lead-off infield single, went to second when Leonesio reached on a fielder's choice.  They each advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Valdivia.  On the second pitch he saw and with one out, Alex Solis drove him Baker and Leonesio with a single up the middle to increase the Warriors' lead to 6-1.

Noah Chelberg came in relief of Ramirez in the eighth and held the Broncos scoreless as the guests took the series finale 6-1 and the weekend series 3-1.

WARRIOR HITTERS:  Stan State had ten hits on the day with Mac Cabero leading the way going three-for-four with a run scored.  Jacob Baker was two-for-four with a run batted in and a run scored.  Robert Valdivia was two-for-four with a run batted in while Ryan Leonesio scored twice.  Alex Solis drove in two runs as he finished one-for-five for the day.

STAN STATE PITCHERS:  In his first start of the season, Anthony Ramirez (3-1) picked up the win pitching seven innings, giving up five hits and one unearned run while striking out a season high five batters and walking two.  Noah Chelberg pitched the final two innings of relief, giving up one hit and striking out two.

FIFTH SERIES WIN:  Out of their eight CCAA four-game weekend series this season, the Warriors have captured of them against Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State San Marcos, San Francisco State, and Cal Poly Pomona.  Stan State split its weekend series with Chico State and Cal State Los Angeles.  The Warriors lost two series (1-3) to Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State San Bernardino.  In non-conference play, Stan State won the weekend series with Central Washington and split with Holy Names.

MOVE INTO A TIE FOR THIRD PLACE:  With their 6-1 series finale victory and taking the four-game series from Cal Poly Pomona, Stan State moves into a tie for third place with San Francisco State with eight games left in the regular season.  The Warriors own the tie breaker with SF State as they won the series from the Gators last weekend in Turlock.  They also own the tie breaker with Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Dominguez Hills.  The top six teams at the end of the regular season receive a berth to the 2023 CCAA Baseball Championships, May 10-13, in Seaside, Calif.
