TURLOCK, Calif.-- Stan State's bullpen crew of
Patrick Sweeney,
Kody Cardoza,
Trent Huff, and
LaKeal Morris combined to pitch 4.1 scoreless innings of relief, giving up seven hits, striking out six, and walking two, but the Warriors lost 5-2 in the series opener to the visiting Sonoma State Seawolves.
Sonoma State (16-21, 10-19 CCAA) took a 3-0 lead in its half of the first inning. Kenny Decelle had a lead-off single. He went to second when Elijah Munoz walked. Mark Hernandez singled home Decelle and Munoz scored on a Warrior fielding error to give the Seawolves a 2-0 lead. They added another run on a single by Christopher Wright which brought in Hernandez.
Stan State (24-18, 17-15 CCAA) scored its first run in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs,
Robert Valdivia and
Alex Solis had back-to-back singles.
Flavio Perez drove home Valdivia with a single through left the side to cut the Warrior deficit to 3-1.
The Warriors cut the Sonoma lead to 3-2 with a run in the fourth inning.
Mac Cabero had a lead-off single and went to third when
Danny Murphy reached on a sacrifice bunt which the Seawolves threw the ball away to place runners on second and third. Cabero scored on a sacrifice fly by
Jacob Baker to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Seawolves added two more insurance runs in the fifth to increase their lead to 5-2. The pitching duo of Chase Banks (2-1) and Ross Goldschlag combine to pitch 5.2 innings of scoreless relief, giving up just one hit, walking two and striking out three in preserving the Sonoma State 5-2 series opening victory.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Stan State managed just six hits on the evening.
Mac Cabero was two-for-four with a run scored.
Flavio Perez was two-for-two with a run batted in for the Warriors.
Robert Valdivia and
Alex Solis each had a hit apiece.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Tony Jacob (3-3) suffered the loss in the start despite tying his career high with seven strikeouts. Four Warrior relievers combined to pitch 4.1 scoreless innings of relief, while giving up seven hits, walking two and striking out six in

FOURTH PLACE: With the loss this evening, Stan State moves into fourth place just percentage points out of third place (San Francisco State) and percentage points ahead of Cal State East Bay (fifth place). The Warriors are also only one game out of sixth place (Cal Poly Pomona).
