Seawolves Take Two from Stan State in CCAA Doubleheader

TURLOCK, Calif.--   The visiting Sonoma State Seawolves swept this afternoon's CCAA doubleheader from the Stan State Warriors 4-1 and 8-0 on Golden Valley Health Center Day at Warrior Stadium.  The two teams will wrap up the four-game series tomorrow at noon on Senior Day.  Prior to the game at approximately 11:40am, Stan State will recognize its five seniors in Casey Carr, Bobby Garcia, Tony Jacob, Maxwell Pappas, and Anthony Ramirez.

GAME ONE:  Sonoma State took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Kenny Decelle had a lead-off triple and scored when Mark Hernandez grounded into a double play.  The Seawolves doubled their lead on a one-out single by Chris Ortiz in the top of the second inning.

The guests once again doubled their lead, this time with a two-run fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead.

Stan State (24-20, 17-17 CCAA) cut the deficit to 4-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth.  Flavio Perez had a one-out double and scored on a Kyle Rachels' single up the middle.  That's the closest the Warriors would get as the Seawolf duo of Blake Janowicz and Scotty Kato held them scoreless the final five innings to take the 4-1 victory.

WARRIOR HITTERS:  Stan State had six hits on the day.  Flavio Perez went two-for-four with a run scored while Mac Cabero was two-for-four.  Kyle Rachels had a hit and a run batted in and Ryan Leonesio added a hit.

STAN STATE PITCHERS:  Casey Carr (5-4) took the loss in the start for the Warriors.  Noah Chelberg and LaKeal Morris combined to pitch five scoreless innings of relief, giving up four hits, striking out four and walking one.

GAME TWO:  The nightcap was pitching duel between the Warriors' Anthony Ramirez and Sonoma State's Tanner Fonoti for the first four inning.  Sonoma State (18-21, 12-19 CCAA) took the 1-0 lead with a run in the fourth inning.  Cooper Callison and Mark Hernandez had back-to-back singles to begin the Seawolf fourth.  Callison scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Christopher Wright.

The Seawolves broke the game open with a five-run fifth to take a 6-0 lead.  Shane Callison's two-run double being the big hit for the guests.  They added two insurance runs in the sixth to take the 8-0 lead.  Sonoma starter Tanner Fonotti (5-3) shut down the Warriors as he finished with a complete game five-hit shutout, striking out three and walking one.

WARRIOR HITTERS:  Stan State had five hits in the night cap with Alex Solis going two-for-three.  Kyle Rachels, Flavio Perez, and Luke Davies each had a hit apiece.

STAN STATE PITCHERS:  Anthony Ramirez (3-2) suffered the loss in the start for Stan State even though he tied his career high with seven strikeouts.  Damian Vallejos pitched one innings, giving up two hits and two runs (one earned) while walking two.  Bobby Garcia pitched a scoreless seventh while striking out one and giving up no hits.

TIED FOR FIFTH:  Stan State is in a tie for fifth place with Cal Poly Pomona but hold the tie-breaker as the Warriors took three out of four from the Broncos last week in Pomona.  The top six teams at the end of the regular season next Saturday, May 6 will receive a berth to the six-team CCAA Baseball Championships Tournament in Seaside, Calif., (May 10-13) at Otter Sports Complex on the campus of Cal State Monterey Bay.
