Warriors Drop Series Opener vs. Toros

TURLOCK, Calif. – It was a tough day in terms of efficiency for the Warriors in their opening two games against Cal State Dominguez Hills for the team's final homestand of the season. Going 4-2 and 7-1 in both games to start the series, the Warriors struggled defensively to keep the Toros in check through 14 innings.

GAME ONE: Things seemed to nearly get out of hand early in the game, following a 1st inning scoring jump from the Toros to get out in front 3-0. Battling back in the 5th, the Warriors bounced back to score two runs to increase their chances of overcoming the lead. A final run scored by Dominguez Hills in the 7th inning however, solidified the visitors opening game victory.

SCORING SUMMARY: Stan State got their offense rolling in the 5th inning after an RBI single for Mikaela Ferreira with two runners on base. Avery Fitch would make her way in for the score to put the Warriors down just 3-1. Shortly thereafter, Katie Thornsberry would take a fielder's choice to first base and make way for an RBI and run scored by Korie Corral. Down a run, the Warriors were hit with an untimely homer to left field in the top 7th inning, that wasn't answered back from in the bottom of the 7th, leaving the home team down 1-0 in the Dominguez Hills series.

TOUGH DAY AT THE PLATE: The Toros shuffled three pitchers through the circle in game one, striking out 12 batters and giving up just 5 hits. The Warriors' biggest hit came on a Ferreira single in which she later advanced to second, eventually leading to one of the team's two RBIs in the matchup.

SLOW START: Two of Stan State's costly mistakes came in the form of errors in the opening inning of the game. The Toros managed to get three early unearned runs following fielding errors from the Warriors that were quite tough to come back from.

GAME TWO: The Warriors reorganized their looks both in the field and in the batting order for the final Friday game of the opening half of the series. It was another slow offensive outing for the Warriors, who scored a 4th inning run after getting walked with the bases loaded. Three errors put pressure on the Warriors' defense throughout the game, as they couldn't seem to shake their mistakes off to stage a comeback.

SCORING SUMMARY: After getting out in front with three-runs scored in the 1st inning, the Toros upped their run totals in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th inning to stay out in front over the home Warriors. Jessell Lewis was walked with the bases loaded during the 4th inning, leading to an RBI and Avery Fitch score. However, the team couldn't quite find the means to capitalize on their on-base opportunity.

FIELD ACTIVITY: The Warriors doubled up with back-to-back 21-putout games two cap off their Friday stats. This time, they got going with a little more motion as a team, putting 15 assists together. Payton Applequist had a career-high day in putouts with 14 at the first base spot, while Sheridan Gulley led the way with four assists.

UP NEXT: Stan State will honor their seniors tomorrow morning before their 11am matchup with Dominguez Hills for the last two games of their weekend series.
