Warriors Uptick in Hitting Can’t Corral the Toros

TURLOCK, Calif. – Stan State was able to turn the tide on their slow offensive start to begin Saturday's final Senior Day series vs. Cal State Dominguez Hills. 4-1 and 5-4 losses closed out the Warriors' final home series of the 2023 season, as the team fought found their swing in a game two eruption.

GAME ONE: The Saturday afternoon opener remained tied at one run a piece up until the top of the 3rd inning, as the Toros were able to get out in front to a one-run lead that they never relinquished. Untimely home runs from Dominguez Hills helped them get on the board in both the 2nd and 7th inning to put the game out of reach.

SCORING SUMMARY: The Warriors' lone run was scored in the 2nd inning, as Sarah Warden knocked single through the left side for an RBI and unearned run for Sheridan Gulley. The play was setup by a fielding error on the Toros' shortstop that helped Madison Flexser reach second base and advance Gulley to third.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE: Sarah Warden had herself a day, earning an RBI and a triple in the 2nd and 5th inning of the game. This was Warden's second triple of the season. Sheridan Gulley also earned a double to left center field in the bottom of the 2nd inning, her 3rd of the year.

CLEAN SLATE: Stan State shook off their struggles with errors in today's opening matchup, notching their third-straight 21-putout game, adding 11 assists.

GAME TWO: The home team locked back in for game two, putting up two back-to-back runs in the 1st inning to gain their footing after an early 1-0 lead from the Toros. The Warriors did cool off by the 3rd inning however, but that wasn't before they scored runs in innings three and four to extend their lead. A 6th inning homer by Dominguez Hills took the air out of the stadium to secure the team's comeback win.

SCORING SUMMARY: Gulley got things started with an RBI single to left center for Katie Thornsberry in the 1st inning. In the following at-bat, Lauryn Serda brought Emily Bigley home for run #2 after an RBI single to the shortstop. Kaylee Heath earned the team's 3rd run of the game in the 2nd inning, singling a ball down the right field line for an RBI for Madison Flexser. The final Warriors run was scored in the 3rd inning by Karli DalBianco, who hit a single to right center, making way for a Lauryn Serda run.

HITTING SHOES: The Warriors put together a whopping four RBIs in their series finale with 11 hits to go along with the scoring spike. Bigley, Heath, Gulley, and Serda each led the way with two hits each.

CAN YOU DO SOMETHING FOR ME?: 21 Putouts was the magic number, as Stan State once again equals their putout totals for another straight game. Leading the way at first base was Payton Applequist with six.

UP NEXT: The team will travel down to San Marcos for their final series of the year. Games are set for Friday and Saturday, April 28th-29th starting at 1pm and 11am.
