SAN MARCOS, Calif. – A late scoring outburst in game one wasn't quite enough to put the Warriors ahead following 4-3 and 8-0 losses to Cal State San Marcos on the road to kick off their series. Stan State couldn't hold off the 26-17 Cougars through 13 total innings played on Friday afternoon.
GAME ONE: The opening game got off to a slow start for the Warriors, who gave up an early home run in the 2
nd inning after a 1
st inning unearned run. Up 3-0 Cal State San Marcos went scoreless until the 6
th inning, as the Warriors fought to tie the game 3-3 with all of their runs coming in the 5
th inning.
SCORING SUMMARY: Sheridan Gulley sparked the team's scoring sprout with a single up the middle that snowballed into an error thrown to home plate for an
Avery Fitch score. Gulley later made her way home following an error at first base following a hit by
Lauryn Serda. The game tying run came from
Katie Thornsberry's single to the first baseman, as she avoided a tag out and opened up a lane for
Karli DalBianco to snag her first run of the day.
HAPPY ACCIDENTS: Cougar errors were a blessing in plain sight for the Warriors, as San Marcos racked up five total errors on the game, three of which led to Stan State runs.
THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY: It was an unfortunate 6
th inning wild pitch that put the Cougars ahead by a run to win the game. Despite having one last chance at staying alive, a slow 7
th inning plagued the Warriors final shot at glory to keep the game alive.
GAME TWO: A stifling Cougars squad came out swinging to open up the second game of the day, as they scored six of their runs in the 1
st inning of the ball game. Both teams were quite until the final two runs were scored by San Marcos in the 5
th inning to close the game out early.
SCORING SUMMARY: The Cougars opening runs all came from RBI singles that funneled in their lead. One final home run in the 5
th inning put the game out of reach and retired the Warriors second game of the series.
PITCHING WOES: Kyndra Marzorini was swapped out for
Jessell Lewis after four innings of action. Unable to collect any strikeouts on the day, they collective did earn eight groundouts and six force outs.
DOWN ON DEFENSE: The Warriors had a tough time keeping a lid on the Cougars scoring, putting up 14 total putouts as a team on eight assists and four errors.
Avery Fitch led the team with five putouts at first base, while Gulley and Lewis had three assists each.
UP NEXT: Continuing their series, Stan State will face San Marcos in their series/season finale tomorrow afternoon starting at 11am in an attempt to bounce back.
