LOLETA, Calif.--- Stan State started its weekend with a doubleheader split with the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks taking the opener 9-8, but Humboldt took the night cap 16-0 (five innings).
Mikaela Ferreira,
Lauryn Serda, and
Kaylee Heath combined to go seven-for-13, with seven runs batted in and two runs scored in the opener for the Warriors.
GAME ONE: Stan State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning of the series opener.
Sheridan Gulley led off the inning reaching on a Lumberjack error. She went to second on a two-out single by
Sarah Warden. Still with two outs,
Cherise Mori was hit by a pitch to load the bases for
Mikaela Ferreira. The Warriors took the 2-9 lead on a two-run double to left field by Ferreira.
The Warriors doubled their lead to 4-0 with a two-run third inning.
Madison Flexser led off the inning being hit by a pitch and went to second on a single by
Kaylee Heath. They each advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Gulley. With two outs,
Lauryn Serda hit a two-run triple to right field to bring in Flexser and Heath and give the guests a 4-0 lead.
Stan State (9-20, 5-16 CCAA) increased its lead to 6-0 on a two-run double to right center by Heath. Ferreira reached base on a one-out error by the Jacks. She went to second on a single by
Katie Thornsberry. They both scored on Heath's two-run double to right center to increase Stan State's lead to 6-0.
The Lumberjacks took their first lead of the game with a seven-run fourth inning to take a 7-6 lead. They added another run on a two-out double by Micaela Harris which brought in Shelby Shanks in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The score remained 8-6 Cal Poly Humboldt until the top of the seventh. Gulley had a lead-off single and was pinch ran for by
Emily Bigley.
Payton Applequist followed that with a single to right center to place runners on first and third. With two outs,
Karli DalBianco reached on a two-base Humboldt error which both Bigley and Applequist scored on to tie the game at 8-8. Mori came in to run for DalBianco and scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a Ferreira single.
Humboldt had a lead-off single in its frame of the seventh, but
Kyndra Marzorini (4-4) retired the next three Jack batters to preserve the 9-8 Warrior victory.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Stan State had 11 hits in the series opener with
Mikaela Ferreira leading the way going three-for-five with three runs batted in and a run scored.
Kaylee Heath was two-for-four with two runs batted in and a run scored.
Lauryn Serda had two hits and drove in two runs.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Kyndra Marzorini took the victory in relief for the Warriors. She pitched 3.2 innings of relief, giving up three hits and a run while striking out four and walking one.
Jessell Lewis recorded the no-decision in the start.
GAME TWO: Cal Poly Humboldt (16-19, 4-12 CCAA) took a 6-0 lead in its half of the first of the night cap and never looked back as the Jacks took game two 16-0. Morgan Brants' two-run double in the first capped the six-run first. Humboldt added two more runs in the third to take an 11-0 lead. The Lumberjacks scored five more runs in the fifth including two on a Vanessa Saltos' single.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Stan State had three hits in the night cap, one each by
Katie Thornsberry,
Payton Applequist, and
Avery Fitch.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Victory Alarcon (3-6) suffered the loss for Stan State.
Avery Fitch and
Jessell Lewis also pitched for the Warriors in game two of the doubleheader.
UP NEXT: The two teams will conclude the four-game series tomorrow morning at 10am with another doubleheader at the Bear River Softball Complex in Loleta, Calif. Stan State will return home for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 12 at 2pm against Holy Names University.
