HAYWARD, Calif.-- Stan State split their doubleheader today at Cal State East Bay taking game one 5-4, but falling in the night cap 3-2 (eight innings).
Noah Chelberg recorded the win in relief in the opener while
Anthony Ramirez recorded his eighth save.
Damian Vallejos suffered the loss in the night cap. The Warriors are still alive for the 2023 CCAA Baseball Championships. They to defeat the Pioneers tomorrow in their regular season finale or Cal State Dominguez Hills needs to lose one of their two games tomorrow afternoon at CSU San Bernardino.
GAME ONE: The Warriors took the early 2-0 with a two-run third inning. With two outs,
Robert Valdivia was hit by a pitch. He went to second on a wild pitch.
Kyle Rachels and
Flavio Perez each drew two-out walks to load the bases. With the count 0-2,
Alex Solis drove in Valdivia and Rachels with a single up the middle to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
Stan State (25-23, 18-20 CCAA) added three insurance runs in its half of the fourth inning.
JD Madrigal had a one-out double. With two outs,
Jacob Baker was hit by a pitch. Valdivia drove home Madrigal with a single through the right side. Rachels drew a two-out walk. Pere drove home Baker and Valdivia with a single through the left side to increase the Warriors' lead to 5-0.
The Pioneers cut the Warrior lead to 5-3 with a three-run fourth. A sacrifice fly by Matthew O'Mahony in the fifth inched Cal State East Bay closer to the Warriors, 5-4.
The Warrior relievers in
Noah Chelberg and
Anthony Ramirez held the hosts scoreless in the final four innings to preserve the 5-4 Stan State victory.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Seven different Warriors had one hit apiece in
Robert Valdivia,
Flavio Perez,
Alex Solis,
Mac Cabero,
Tyler Van Dyk,
JD Madrigal and
Luke Davies. Perez and Solis each drove in two runs and Valdivia scored twice.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Casey Carr had the no-decision in the start. He pitched 4.1 innings, giving up five hits and four runs (two earned) while waling three.
Noah Chelberg (1-2) picked up the win in relief, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits, walking two and striking out two.
Anthony Ramirez recorded his eighth save of the season pitching two scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out three.
GAME TWO: For the second straight game, Stan State score first this time in the second inning.
Tyler Van Dyk reached on a Pioneer error and scored on a two-out double by
JD Madrigal. The Warriors doubled their lead with a run in the fifth. Van Dyk had a lead-off single and went to second on a two-out single by
Jacob Baker. He scored on a
Robert Valdivia single up the middle.
Cal State East Bay (27-22, 21-18 CCAA) tied the game at 2-2, with a two-run fifth inning. Cole Anderson had a one-out solo home run. Niko Mollatt was hit by a pitch and later scored on a single by Jacob Froess to tie the game at 2-2.
The Pioneers won the game in their half of the eighth inning. Manny Garcia led off the eighth being hit by a pitch. He went to second on a single by Luke Novitske. Garcia scored the game-winning run when Matthew O'Mahony reached on a fielder's choice and Garcia scored on a Stan State error for the Pioneers' 3-2 walk-off win.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Four Warriors had one hit apiece in

Tyler Van Dyk, and JD Madrigral. Van Dyk scored twice and Valdivia and Madrigal each drove in a run.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Will Crookham recorded the no-decision in the start. He pitched 4.1 innings, giving up two hits and two runs while walking one.

MAGIC NUMBER ONE: Stan State's magic number is one for the sixth and final spot in the six-team 2023 CCAA Baseball Championships, May 10-13, in Seaside, Calif. The Warriors either to defeat Cal State East Bay on Saturday and have Cal State Dominguez Hills lose one of its games at CSU San Bernardino.
